Additional charges are expected for a Newnan man charged with cruelty and aggravated battery for an incident involving his 13-month-old son, who was taken off life support on Monday, authorities said.
Ryan Edwards, 34, of a Southwind Lane, Newnan address, was in the Clayton County Jail on two counts of child cruelty and one count of aggravated battery, according to jail records.
"Charges will be upgraded some time today," a spokeswoman for the Clayton County Police Department said Tuesday. Those additional charges still were not filed by late Tuesday.
According to the Associated Press and other published reports, Toni Brown returned home from work Friday to find the 13-month-old, Mikkah, unresponsive after leaving him in the care of Edwards, the child's father.
She said she took Mikkah to an urgent care facility near their Morrow home, and Mikkah was later transferred to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston because of the extent of his injuries.
"He had suffered a severe brain injury, fractured skull and severe brain damage," Brown was quoted as saying.
Authorities say Brown made the decision to have life support removed on Monday.
