Local shoppers who were headed to Target Tuesday evening for groceries or last-minute back-to-school items may have also picked up a bit of public safety knowledge from Newnan Fire and Police Department officials participating in the annual crime/drug prevention initiative "National Night Out."

Law enforcement personnel and firefighters were on hand to pass out safety tips and to greet the public during the two-hour event, held in the store's parking lot at Newnan Crossing West shopping center off the bypass.

Nonprofit organization National Association of Town Watch joins forces with Target every year to sponsor the program, which is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and reinforce police/community partnerships.

"It's important to portray a positive image to the community," said Newnan Police Deputy Police Chief Rodney Riggs. He and fellow officers Reginald Wimbush and Adam Griffith answered questions and listened to neighborhood concerns while handing out safety pamphlets, reading lights, pencils, badges and notepads.

"It is a great way to have open dialogue with citizens in a relaxed and fun atmosphere," said Newnan Police Chief Douglas L. "Buster" Meadows before the event.

A city fire engine was also parked on site for children to inspect and climb aboard, while firefighters provided any needed safety or fire-prevention information.

Prior to the festivities, Fire Chief David Whitley expressed enthusiasm for the "National Night Out" initiative. "It is a great night for the community," he said. "When the public safety agencies and businesses partner up for community events, it is a win-win situation for everyone."
