Cowetans did their part to Stamp Out Hunger Saturday by leaving non-perishable food donations at their mailboxes for their U.S. Postal Service letter carriers to collect.
By 4 p.m., volunteers had received approximately 7,000 pounds of food — and a number of letter carriers had not yet returned from their routes, according to Food Drive Coordinator Donna Vogt-Demmons.
“We’ve been pretty busy,” said Vogt-Demmons. “If it goes the way that I’m thinking, we’ll exceed what we collected last year.”
Vogt-Demmons said this year’s food drive was going fluidly because of the increased number of volunteers who came forward to help. The letter carriers returned to the main U.S. Post Office — located on Postal Parkway off Bullsboro Drive — to help sort through the donated food items on the docks.
The annual food drive is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. Last year about 10,000 pounds of food was collected. According to Vogt-Demmons, one rural carrier delivering in the area of Raymond picked up 441 pounds of food last year. Still another carrier had to make a trip back to the post office to empty her vehicle before returning to finish her route.
Donations from the “Stamp Out Hunger” drive will go not just to One Roof, but also to the Salvation Army, the First Newnan Seventh Day Adventist Church, the First Baptist Church of Grantville, Crossroads Baptist Church and Oak Lawn Baptist Church, all of which sponsor programs to feed local people.

I too left food out but it still is sitting there. Why wasn't it picked up? If the truck was full, send out another one...I'm sure someone would appreciate my donation.

I left it out again on Monday, still wasn't picked up. I even raised the flag on the mailbox. I guess I'll take it to a local food bank that will appreciate it.
