If gas prices reach $5 per gallon by Memorial Day as many are predicting, will you seriously consider purchasing a more fuel-efficient automobile?

The Chattahoochee River roared past its flood stage of 15 feet at Whitesburg Sunday and by Monday afternoon was headed for an all-time record, set to surpass the old high flood stage of 29.11 feet by more than two full feet before the river crests at a predicted 31.5 feet Tuesday afternoon.
The current all-time flood record of 29.11 feet at the Whitesburg measuring station was set in December 1919.
The river was at 28.26 feet by 2:45 p.m. Monday as residents of low-lying areas along the river in western Coweta were evacuating.
Upstream, portions of Carroll, Douglas, Cobb and Paulding counties have recorded more than 15 inches of rain from 8 p.m. Friday to 12:40 p.m. Monday, according to a precipitation map posted at the National Weather Service - Peachtree City Web site.
National Weather Service officials were projecting Monday that the river will not fall below flood stage at Whitesburg until Thursday afternoon, when it is projected to drop below the 15 ft. level for the first time in four days.
Although any flooding event is unpredictable and residents are warned to always be ready to evacuate in the event of flooding, the National Weather Service has a set of guidelines indicating the expected effects of Chattahoochee River flooding near the Whitesburg measuring station:
* At 17 feet minor flooding continues and Payton Road Bridge near Cliff Payton Circle floods.
* At 18 feet, farm and pasture land begins to flood and some evacuation of livestock in the river's flood plain is required. A sod farm upstream also experiences flooding.
* At 19 feet, minor flooding occurs to some unimproved dirt roads, and at 21 feet some access roads are flooded. More farm and pasture land is flooded out.
* Things get more serious at the 26 feet flood stage, when major flooding begins. Small coffer dams at Georgia Power Plant Wansley 12 miles downstream begin to be overtopped by floodwaters.
* At 28 feet, river intake buildings flood at Georgia Power Plant Yates.
* If the river reaches a record high of 30 feet it is estimated the pumping station at Georgia Power's Plant Wansley -- 12 miles downstream -- floods.
* At 38 feet the new Highway 16, Highway 27 Alternate bridge would be flooded out.

And another quote by you,'I've lived all over the country', if you are referring to 'THE FLAG', ITS FLYING ALL OVER THE WORLD'! The Southern Hospitality is still 'Flying' here in the South,You just have to search a little deeper due to Bigots LIKE YOU' your quote again JOHNNY BOY ' but I still love it as most folks are like the ones pictured here'.

Great to see folks helping out a friend in need. Maybe some day we can put aside the Northern/Southern stuff and all live like the Americans our founding fathers pictured. I've lived all over the country and the regional hatrid is strongest here, but I still love it as most folks are like the ones pictured here.

Poor, poor southgate - you are the embarrassment. Stringed instruments have been around from the earliest times of man. All countries, and peoples have played them. Did you not like them because the players didn't look like you? Restudy your own history. All peoples have contributed to the make-up of music.Did the sounds and words not connect with you? Well, that happens with all music too.Study hard dear and grow up. Don't be embarrassed by musical instruments but small minded people should be a concern.

Positive suggestion! Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on how to eliminate or control the trash from Atlanta after every rain!Floods this magnitude might only come every 100 years, however, as everyone south of Fulton County line knows after every 2"-2-1/2" of rain we get tons of Floating trash From Atlanta! Any Progressive,Radical Ideas? Be nice Southside! G.T.O.'s

The sewer infastructure in Atlanta is in decay. Even with current funding it will take over a decade to fix it. How do we protect Coweta county from their lack of foresight. Do we have in place, of have we ever had, plans for levees along the Chattahoochee ? What's the drawback? Surely that would qualify for stimulus money and provide jobs. All this mess from up stream will not improve with time. No matter how much money is poured into Atlanta their problems won't go away.

Well the river is going down as of this morning. So maybe Ray will be able to get back to his house today sometimes to see how much stuff he lost inside.I'm sure he lost everthing but he is in good spirit about everything. And just to let everyone know the flag never did touch the water when the water got up to it the wind blew it and it wraped around the flag poll and went right back to flying. So now we have some work in front of us to get Rays place back to going.

While I am no big fan of the confederate flag I see nothing wrong with the times herald using this photo. Come on guys, get a grip. When I saw this in the paper yesterday my first thought was 'man, feel bad for that guy' not 'LOOK AT HIS FLAG!'. For Mr. Gray, I don't like your flag but you have every right to fly it. I hope you are able to get back home soon.

I lived at this location for 10+ years with my dad (Ray Gray). It's sad that the world has to always find something negative in everything. He has lost his home. Did you hear me? We are to Love one another as Christ loved the Church and gave his life for it. My dad is not a racist. Ask Gilbert Kelly (Elder and Pastor at Atlanta City Church) who is an African American that came to hunt with me and my dad. He gave my dad Ray Gray a new .30-06 Rifle w/scope for his hospitality.

How long did it take your photographer, Jeffrey Leo, to find a photo-op that showed some flooding (which the story was ostensibly concerning), and the contrived star of your guided story, the Confederate battle flag. I guess everyone was covering the flood, so you guys thought you'd slip in a little controversy and manipulate an emotional response from your readers. No wonder the Newspaper Industry is failing.

It is a tribute to our great society that we are so prosperous, with so much idle time on our hands, that we have the luxury to be perpetually offended by everything. I thought I would see if the flood waters were receding, and I found myself bombarded by liberal busy-bodies, once again, missing the point of a story, while reveling in their false moral superiority and pseudo-indignation.

If there were less people in this county that are all about themselves the better off this county would be. Who cares what the mans house looks like or what kind of flags...if it was an African American with a Malcolm X flag you would still have something to say. Look inside how this man and other people are feeling right now. I am sure these people are devistated. I could not even imagine how i would feel it I had to look at pictures of my home halfway underwater. Whether there is a Rebel flag or how the house looks or if the truck is out of place this man and others affected have feelings. Be considerate of those who are reading these comments you make. It is no longer about the people who are living high and dry right now, it is about the ones who either lost everything they own or most of what they own. Really think if all you know is washed away..GONE..have to start all over. Materialistic people of COWETA COUNTY....open your eyes. It could be you the next time.

Then why are you embarassed of his home being "featured" in your local newspaper? Sure it was an inference, but the way you presented it really yields no other presumtion.

Heck..I'm no expert but if it walks like a duck, looks like a duck..it must be a poodle? Come on what is there left to understand about this symbol and its representation of intolerance, hate, violence, rape and murder? Why should we responsible white folks overlook this to serve our own selfishness? I'm sure that if any decent white folk on the river that needed help stopped by good old boys house...would most certainly get it. And he may be nice as sin to you. But if you are of another persuasion.. you probably wouldn't stop here anyway and if you did you may have gotten a shotgun or two in your face. Stereotypes are wrong..but there are some truths to them! I'm glad you are proud of the South and your Southern Heritage. Maybe you even had an ancestor that served during the war between the states..but to have no regard for and to display your "stick in up yours" attitude is sickening. Even still...I would help this person with no problem and hope to educate them as to the hurt this symbol causes. And by the way..the Nazi symbol was Native American to begin with and was corrupted by Hitler. I believe if you fly a flag in a community with a large Jewish population with that symbol they would recognize the differnce too. Maybe that doesn't concern you either because they don't play to your insecurities like black folks do? Quack Quack Quack

Leave it to a bunch of Idiots to find Racism in a freakin picture about a flood, not racism, a flood, did I mention that this pic is about a flood. "Really"..."Really" How convenient for you people that this picture had this flag in it. If you dont like how people live around here, LEAVE! Go somewhere else and find something to complain about. GEEZ!
Posted by Johnny at 9:43 AM
The statement by M at 7:39 PM is excellent - you'd have a hard time finding a flag that has not been flown while it's supporters committed some kind of atrocity. Everyone would benefit from studying more history. The Confederate flag means different things to different people - don't be so narrow minded, and don't think the flag tells you what's in someone's heart.

Its heartbreaking to see people being so hateful, racist and mean, especially during a time like this, over something like this. One day all heads will bow and all will see God and feel really ashamed. How would you feel right now if he were to appear in front of you?

I'm no history expert but I belive the US Army flew the American flag as they killed thousands of indians claiming this great country, if we can let that go then I think we need to let the Confederate flag fly in peace, you can find so called hate in almost anything, but why go looking for hate?

Thank our lucky stars we had the dam on lake Lanier to catch a lot of the water north of us. Years ago it did not take near the rain fall we had to get the Chattahoochee out of her banks. Also the city fo West Point was helped by the West Point Lake dam. Other wise things could have been a lot worse.

You should feel pretty low. The first comment about this tragedy is about what kind of flag is in a guys yard? You claim that this flag is a slap in the face of others. What you have to understand is the "SLAP" here has only the power you give it = by complaining, and diluting the issue = flooding. You have hijacked the news story itself, and now a minor issue = the flag in the yard is the MAIN issue .............hence the "SLAP" now has strength and power behind it.....thanks to you.

My God! A family's home is shown flooded and all some can do is be offended by the flag that is that family's right to fly? Good grief!
Posted by John Martinez at 3:14 PM
I'm sorry to see how people act over a flag it's not a big deal u people really need to grow up. We have better things to worry about. Like the fact these peoples homes was flooded and they could have lost their lives in the flood. Matter fact there was a little boy who was only 3 years old had lost his life in the flood in Carroll County. So grow up people.

Well, I have a white hankie, but my Keds have a Georgia clay color line above the rubber duckie sole. Shall we agree that maybe here in Georgia, a simple Peach color flag will work for the present,(as some of us have no choice?) Let's all just throw away our history, historical buildings, etc. and forget it and get on with our lives. Meanwhile, whoever can get anywhere to take a picture, bless you, and keep that music playing! Hopefully, the creek won't rise so high as to cover that flag (or Ford)...
Posted by Gwendol Bowling at 2:34 PM
I have to say that when I went down the river a few weeks ago, stopping at Ray's was one of the highlights. Why is the flag being brought into this? I will never personally fly a rebel flag, but to each his own. Let's not forget that he may lose a lot of his personal possessions in this. That's the tragedy!!! Stop being stupid, people
Posted by Citizen at 1:50 PM
I never brought race and class into this. Matt, you are the first person to infer a classification of "trash". Do you presume that all of the people for whom this flag is offensive are of one race/class? If so this is yet another example of backwards thinking. Slinky suggested a move to Kenya. Was his/her choice of country picked with a racial undertone? I find all of this very telling. As to these posts, I find Ashley's and Wish I could help's to be the most on point. Well said by each, now is a time to come together as a community. A community made up of many...
Posted by southgate at 1:48 PM
The flooding is the story. The flag is here to stay.Get over it, or move
Posted by C.H.Luke at 1:38 PM
Ok, so you come up here and disrespect somebody by pretty much calling him trash and now its a racial issue because of a flag? Its an ongoing issue and a matter of opinion that we could sit here and debate for hours. The bottom line is that you're casting stones from a glass house and there are several people here that disagree with you.
Posted by Matt at 1:32 PM
I had a thought as I read the comments regarding Ray's place. If we all, myself included, spent less time reading and writing reviews and more time trying to HELP our neighbors, instead of criticizing them Coweta County would then be THE place to live. This isn't about what is hanging on a flag pole this is about a neighbor in need of help.
Posted by Wish I could help at 1:22 PM
Seriously how can you sit here and be worried about a flag when people's homes are being destroyed...My heart goes out to all of the families!!!!I have a rebel flag hanging in my house!!!!
Posted by Ashley at 1:11 PM
Dang, that flag sure is red... You can preach heritage, you can preach pride but you cannot discount the fact that this "symbol" is still a slap in the face to some of the other "nicest people" in your county, state, country("north" is still the UNITED STATES, DB)and yes others who "enjoy the Chattahoochee for its merits". We can be sorry for peoples loss/damage without causing further damage. The world is a smaller place than it once was. It is time for us to embrace it.

Southgate, find some way to redeem yourself. Start by helping someone whose home flooded then do the rest of us a favor and MOVE. The State of GA might've said no to the flag that apparently offends your delicate sensibilities but individuals still have their rights. By the way, do you even have a clue about the flag--it's true historic meaning, not the politically convenient meaning? Get a clue!

Well, honey, I may be a transplanted member of Coweta County, but this photo points out that Coweta County is with one of the original 13 States. Furthermore, when we sing, "I've seen fire and I've seen rain..." we by gosh, are singin' a truth. If the truth is embarrassing, well, I'm willing to admit I have a backside, and I wasn't even born here, or that long ago...in Georgia, USA (not Georgia, Russia...)
Posted by Gwendol Bowling at 11:45 AM
There is nothing wrong with the picture! It is a picture of real people in a real situation. What's your problem with it? Is it the Confederate flag? You have to be one uppity snot nose person to take the time to write about what you call an "embarrassing" picture when the real story is the fact that people's homes are being flooded. Get a life!
Posted by peach at 11:42 AM
So nice of you to judge when you don't know the people or circumstances. If you want to talk about class, the man that owns that house is one of the nicest people you could ever be lucky enough to meet. Chances are that if you've ever enjoyed the Chattahoochee for its merits, you're on a first name basis with Ray. Its a shame that his place got flooded....you're lucky that yours didn't.

What is really sad is when you leave a positive blog 2 weeks ago and you come back to see what has been said since...and people are still on the flag stuff. For anyone who is blogging about a flag..get over it. That is not what this was put here for. I feel sorry for the ones talking about the flag and for the ones steady defending the flag. Wish I had less things to do in my life than stressing and defending a piece of material. This man that I DON'T even know..lost his things. Who cares about the flag and its meaning whether it is redneck or not..it is about what he lost. Some of you people are some inconsiderate idiots.
