Cancer hospital holds 'topping off' ceremony as last beam put in place

By JEFF BISHOP jbishop@newnan.com Cancer Treatment Centers of America held a "topping off" ceremony Thursday to celebrate the final steel beam being placed at the new hospital, located on Newnan Crossing Bypass near JC Penney. Executives from CTCA, PSA Dewberry, Okland & Batson-Cook, local business and civic leaders, and other community leaders attended the event.
A workforce of more than 400 has been on site in recent weeks, working diligently to ready the structure for the milestone. "Construction is moving positively," said Kristin D. Schaner, public affairs manager for CTCA. The Newnan hospital will be the fifth CTCA location in the U.S., and the new hub for the Southeast region. CTCA's 212,000-square-foot, all-digital hospital will focus exclusively on treating cancer. It will include 50 beds, ICU rooms, surgical suites, state-of-the-art radiation and infusion therapy departments, an outpatient clinic, a rehabilitation and physical therapy department, and on site residential accommodations for outpatients and their families. The hospital is expected to generate $500 million in economic activity over the first five years, and create approximately 500 new jobs after the fifth year of operation. With more than two-thirds of patients expected to come from outside the state of Georgia, patients and their families will also contribute to the growth and vitality of the local economy, hospital officials say. Groundbreaking for the new CTCA facility took place in August 2011. The $55 million center is scheduled to open in September 2012. Construction on the new Piedmont Newnan Hospital, located on Poplar Road, also continues at a steady pace. This 136-bed facility is scheduled for completion in spring 2012. At $165 million, the Piedmont hospital project is the second largest hospital project currently under way in the Atlanta metro area. According to the Coweta County Development Authority, approximately 475 workers are involved in the construction phase of the project on a daily basis. In the long run, both new hospitals are expected to add substantially to the county's health care employment base. Next to the Piedmont Newnan hospital, an 110,000-square-foot, four-story medical office also will be opening by early 2012. The Coweta County Health Department moved into its new $1.7 million facility on Hospital Road in June 2011. A new Samaritan Clinic is also being planned in the old health department facilities near downtown Newnan.
