The Coweta County Water and Sewerage Authority is writing off bad debts.
The authority has hired a collections agency to try and collect on old bills, said Melinda Garland, office manager. But the agency will only accept accounts from the last six and a half years, she said.
"We've got a lot of old, old stuff, from 1983 to 2001, that we're constantly billing out every month," she said. And that money is never going to be collected.
The debt totals approximately $116,000, Garland said.
"No bad debt has been written off here before. Now it is time," said General Manager Ellis Cadenhead.
If the authority has a valid address for the old, delinquent customers, a bill is still sent out every month. That happens on about half of the 1,338 delinquent accounts from '83 to '01. And each of those bills costs about 47 cents.
Though the debt will be written off and no more bills will be sent, the authority will still keep a record of those debts. If one of those people tries to get a new account with the authority, they will have to pay the old bill.
"We have collected some in the past, when people have tried to come back on," Cadenhead said.
The authority voted unanimously to write off the bad debts.
