Artists take center stage on Court Square

The Newnan Times-Herald

The recent pollen didn't keep people from enjoying a warm spring evening of art and culture in downtown Newnan Friday.

The first of many 2011 Main Street Newnan events kicked off Friday with the Spring Art Walk, which is a free, bi-annual event.

Nearly 20 merchants around the Court Square displayed the work of more than 70 artists during Friday's event. In addition to paintings, there was photography, furniture painting and art work from young artists. Musicology provided live entertainment on the square during the event.

Visitors enjoyed the strolling gallery and had the opportunity to talk with artists about their work -- and even purchase their favorite pieces.

Charlotte and John Mitchell, of Sharpsburg, ventured into town Friday for their second Art Walk experience.

"We enjoyed last year's," said Charlotte Mitchell, who prizes the opportunity to peruse unique art and merchandise.

John Mitchell said that they enjoy getting out and looking at all the different art.

"We're hoping Newnan will do more things like this -- something that brings more people into downtown," said Charlotte.

"The crowds started early -- and this certainly has attracted people of all ages," said Main Street Event Coordinator Tina Darby.

"It was nice to see people out strolling beautiful, historic Newnan viewing art, sampling refreshments and listening to the music. It was a perfect spring evening."

We love it! Downtown Newnan is always great. The Spring Art walk was great--fun shops, beautiful artwork, charming atmosphere--what's not to like? Looking forward to Market Days and all other Main Street events.
