About 200 attend tax day rally on steps of Newnan City Hall

By Jeff Bishop

The Newnan Times-Herald

About 200 people showed up on the steps of Newnan City Hall Wednesday to protest government spending as part of the nationwide "tea party" movement inspired by a Feb. 19 on-air rant by CNBC correspondent Rick Santelli.

Participants hoisted signs proclaiming "End Corporate Welfare," "Stop Spending Our Money" and "Don't Tread on Me" as they cheered "U.S.A.! U.S.A.!" and sang patriotic songs such as "God Bless America" and the "Star-Spangled Banner."

State Sen. Mitch Seabaugh (R-Sharpsburg) said he was pleased with the turnout as he addressed the crowd over a loudspeaker.

"If each one of us takes some initiative to reach out to people," said Seabaugh, "we will take back Congress, we will take back the presidency, we will take back this nation!"

He again cited the Mel Gibson film "The Patriot," as he did earlier in the week when members of the 48th Infantry Brigade left the Newnan Armory for Afghanistan. He said he was particularly moved by one scene that depicts a father nodding approvingly to his young son as he volunteers to "go fight for freedom."

The boy was "no more than a middle school student," Seabaugh said.

"We have forgotten what our founding fathers did -- the sacrifices they made to give us the opportunities we have now," he said.

Those founding fathers "believed in a Supreme Being, they believed in God, and they believed that God gave us the rights we have to govern ourselves. And what God giveth, no man can taketh away -- I don't care who's in the White House."

Some "tea party" participants underscored this sentiment when they shouted the "under God" portion of the "Pledge of Allegiance" at a particularly high volume during one part of the rally.

Rep. Billy Horne couldn't be at the demonstration, but he prepared a statement that was read by a representative wherein he announced he had introduced a resolution for Georgia to adopt the "fair tax" and another resolution, H.R. 492, that "claims Georgia sovereignty" under the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

"Federal government is too big and too intrusive," Horne said, and everyone should contact their representatives to let them know that the people expect them to "do less."

"We need to let Washington know we have had enough," Horne said.

John Stevenson hoisted a yellow flag featuring a rattlesnake that's familiar to history buffs as the Gadsden Flag, used during the American Revolution.

"They used this flag to lead the colonials to the Boston Tea Party, which was all about taxation without representation, so I thought it was very appropriate," said Stevenson.

He said he was miffed that "$850 billion in bailouts was rammed through Congress overnight without Congress having a chance to read it."

Connie Singleton carried a sign that said, "Born Free, Taxed to Death."

"We're just disgusted with the government right now," she said. "We feel like we're not being heard. We want to be part of a change, from the bottom up."

Tom Murray said he is "concerned about all the things Obama is doing." He said he was "really encouraged" by the turnout.

"I'm here because I want to get my country back," said George Tedder. "This is a Christian nation. Those are the principles on which this country is founded. And I am appalled at what is happening to our country."

The people at the rally represent the "solid majority" of Americans, Tedder said.

"We need to pray together to help stop this downward spiral," he said.

Leo Harlin Sr. said he would have liked to have seen more people at the event.

"I was hoping we'd have two or three times this many," he said. "But things need to be done differently than the way they are going now. I believe in the U.S. Constitution, and it is being trampled on and ignored."

One example is the country's energy policy, he said.

"I would like to see a comprehensive energy plan -- not windmills," he said. "We ought to be independent. It's not like America to be dependent on other countries."

When the roster of guests had finished speaking, they opened the floor. A truck driver from Texas, Marty Peterson, was the first to take up the microphone.

"The people who call this the party of inclusion -- that's a doggone lie," he said. The audience was temporarily confused, but it quickly became clear that Peterson had intended to say, "exclusion."

"I am so happy to be here," he said. "I would like to take our government back, and we can do it. ... We are right, and they are wrong!"

No, Tom, I didn't. I also find it difficult to believe you are college educated, considering you seem to have difficulty telling the difference between to and too, as well as there and their. The reality is I don't automatically believe CNN or MSNBC, I check stories for myself before deciding whether or not to believe them. You might want to try and do the same. FAUX news has been proven wrong so many times it isn't really funny any more, especially considering the number of Americans who choose to believe them because it is easier than actually doing any work themselves. Your specific words concerning the "swamp rats" as you called them, was that it was "in the stimulus for Nancy Pelosi district". It was not, it was a possible amount that might go to California Coastal Conservancy, which serves the entire coast of California. It was not "in the stimulus" as you claimed. The story was a lie told by conservative news organizations and politicians, when the truth was pointed out to you, you attempted to backpedal on your original claim, twisting this way and that, in order to try and make it fit the truth. Sadly square pegs do not fit round holes. A bit of knowledge most people gain in elementary school.

You started it with the insults. I to have a college education. I used my GI Bill benefits after serving 22 years in the military and in two wars. ALso my last 3 years in the military I was supervisor of a Security force/ anti-terroism unit so I do know something about investigating. You keep right on believing Msnbc and cnn they have proven themselves over again to report lies. The thing with foxnews is they can back up there claims. As far as a sad life I live a very happy and great life. Very active also I donate 15 percent of my income to charitble organizations that help the poor mainly children in foreign countries. Like I said there is a reason CNN and Msnbc rate lower and its not because they present the news. Also my Dad didn't buy me a ford I bought the ford (66 mustang) myself from a uncle. lol Thought I would throw that in. Also one last thing Captain Kangaroo wasn't a military officer like your liberal college will tell you, it was a kids show in the 60s. Also didn't know Fox telling the truth was considered hatred. Oh yes I never said it was written into the stimulus you said that I said there is 30 million in the stimulus going to swamp rats (salt harvest mouse) just so your not confused again.

Tom, it simply is not like saying Mercury instead of Ford, it's more like saying my dad bought me a ford, when really he never did. Whatever money went to coastal conservation after the stimulus package was written has no bearing on your claim that the wording was written into the stimulus bill. A lie is a lie is a lie, and that, dear friend, is plenty of common sense. CNN and MSNBC rate lower than FAUX news because they present news, whereas FAUX news presents entertainment and incendiary hatred towards others, which for much of America, sadly, is a desirable commodity. I understand your issue that actual education and investigation is boring, and that knowledge is somehow inherently liberal, when you prefer to have so much fun spreading lies and hatred, which apparently is inherently conservative, but really the old boring real education is worth the time and effort in the long run. By the way I've been working for a living since I was 15 years old, that's how I can afford to go to college now. I'm sorry being confronted with truth is so hurtful to you that you have to resort to insults and more lies. It's a sad life you lead when you concentrate on hate instead of improving your self and your mind, as well as the world around you.

No you didn't call it an earmark, but you said it was in the stimulus package. It wasn't. There is no earmark for California Coastal Conservancy, nor is there one for the mice in question. It simply is not there. The story that claims it was there is not true. It cannot get any simpler than that. Whether or not any stimulus money is eventually allocated by the Army Corps of Engineers for wetlands restoration has no bearing on the lie that was told by conservatives concerning this matter, or the fact that every one of the supposed earmarks listed by them has turned out to be either legitimate stimulus spending or simply not actually present. Such as teh volcano monitoring pointed out by Bobby Jindal. The problem with people like you is you choose purposely to believe lies and to never check what you are being told. That kind of willful ignorance is inexcusable. As to Google's ownership or even the political donations of any people affiliated with Google does not change the fact that they are not a website. Google is a search engine, when using google to search for a story you are returned all sites that mention the words involved in the story, liberal, conservative, and any in between.

Tea Party

4/18/2009

Link To This Comment

This is crazy. All of you arguing over this 'party'. It shouldn't have been just republicans there, everyone should have been there! Our future and our children's future is at stake here. I just received the new payroll tax information and couldn't believe that most Americans who make several thousand a week will have to pay nearly half back in taxes. Isn't it time we all were taxed fairly? I don't mind helping the poor and needy, however, I have met several people over the years who take advantage of welfare, medicaid, food stamps, and low income housing. At this point, I am tired of paying into a system that is being abused. I pay into Social Security which, according to the recent paperwork I received, will not even be around by the time I retire. How is it fair that I have to give my hard earned money to people who are taking advantage of the system and to some who are not citizens? Shouldn't we take our country back? The trillions of dollars for the stimulus package shouldn't have gone to the banks that screwed us over, it should have went to the American Citizens. I believe that if the stimulus money was give to citizens, the economy would be back on track and probably better than before. Just my opinion, don't freak out and call me names like so many of you on here seem to like to do. I am all for fair tax. I am a republican, however, I didn't like a lot of what Bush did and I didn't care for McCain at all, but I felt they were better than what we had before Bush and what we have now. It seems Socialism is in the works and the political parties and American Citizens are to busy putting each other down and arguing over stupid things to even know that this is happening. It seems like everyday our rights are slowly being taken away. When will this country wake up and realize that the government doesn't run the country, the citizens do. We need to ban together, regardless of parties, and stop this before we become China.

You want to split hairs the fact is the money is going to help the mouse. I don't care how you try to explaim it away. There are over 8000 earmarks in the stimulus some are for what you call other projects. They don't have a name. But is there one in there that says Nancy Pelosis swamp rats? No, Mouse swamp rat whatever. ITs like saying a station wagon isn't a car or we are going to spend 30 million on wetlands the mouse just happens to be in the wetland. The Army Corp of Engineers will decide which wetlands. I guess you didn't see that part heh. Check and see how much money Google donated to the Obama campaign.

No Tom, we can't call it what we want. You specifically claimed there was a 30 million dollar earmark in the stimulus package for swamp rats in Nancy Pelosi's district. This was not true. There was no earmark, neither the California Coastal Conservancy nor the Salt Marsh Mouse in question were mentioned in the stimulus package. However, if they do receive stimulus money it will be for coastal conservancy, which will create jobs along the California coast, and therefore is stimulus. Either way it NEVER appeared as an earmark in the stimulus package.

Tom, Google is not a site. It is a search engine that connects to websites. It is certainly not limited to liberal sites, it pulled up multiple conservative sites and their misreports of the 30 million dollar swamp rat tale. However it also brought up the corrections of those stories. The 30 million dollars was never written into the stimulus package. The California Coastal Conservancy used that figure as a potential, an amount they would like to have for several different projects only one of which was swamp restoration. This was not included in the stimulus package. Will the California Coastal Conservancy receive some stimulus money? Maybe, but again the story that it was included in the stimulus package and that this marsh mouse was in there as well, was a lie. Please, feel free to use whichever search engine suits, and find the information for yourself.

Well as I sit here reading these comments , I figure maybe I, as a hard working American can come up with a government plan to help the ever growing problem of obesity just as taxing smokers (yes I am one , but of my own CHOICE), so on with the plan . In every grocery store, dairy queen, Brewster’s, from here on out there will be a $1.30 tax per cone, gallon, pint, cup ECT. These monies will go for obesity studies and overweight recipients. I know it sounds ridiculous but this is the kind of crap our government is doing to the people (all the people, not just select ones) dems and rep. I tried to make this as example simple to understand so maybe the small minded can really grasp it. Taxation without representation that’s what the tea party is about . WAKE UP before it’s too late.

Swamp rats

4/18/2009

Link To This Comment

I looked into this swamp rat claim, and apparently it boils down to this. In looking for ways to criticize the stimulus package a GOP staffer called a Federal Agency and asked what they might do, should they receive stimulus money. They responded that if they were given stimulus money they would like to use it for wetlands restoration in the San Francisco area, possibly including, but not limited to, protecting a certain endangered salt marsh mouse. After that certain Republican politicians leveled a charge that Pelosi had included 30 million dollars to save a swamp mouse. Unfortunately for them the stimulus package never included any such earmark. And this convoluted tale of how a comment was transformed into a supposed earmark is why it is so important to always check behind the talking heads before you believe anything, they love to exaggerate, and often tell outright lies.

taxes, and swamp rats

4/17/2009

Link To This Comment

Well Tom,without looking into the swamp rat issue I won't hazard a comment. I prefer to know exactly what I'm talking about before I speak. Bobby Jindal might do well to follow suit, after deriding the need for money to monitor volcanoes one under surveillance blew. So often money that seem ill spent turns out to be very necessary. You might want to check who else was getting money from the stimulus package, many conservative politicians who derided the package are seeing a lot of money coming to their districts in what could easily be called pork, but that will in actuality create jobs and stimulate the economy. Many politicians say one thing and then do whatever suits them. That's why I make it a habit to check into anything I hear as opposed to just believing it because some party line talking head spouted it in my general direction. As to executive orders, again three months is simply not enough time, even working around the clock to create and sign enough executive orders to correct everything that went wrong in the last 8 years. We shall see where the topic ends under this administration and I will reserve judgment until that time.

There is a place for everything, including taxes and programs that help people who fall on hard times. They shouldn't be abolished, but there should be some serious changes to the policies that govern them. There just needs to be more responsibility in DC...period.

Actually tom, I was speaking to the individual tax codes, however as a business operator I have yet to notice our taxes being unduly harsh or large. Admittedly ours is a small local business and not a huge corporation. Then again the huge corporations seem to make out far better using tax shelters and various other methods to minimize their tax bills than we do. As to Obama's continuation of the wiretapping your claim is not exactly the entire story. He has been President for 3 months, and officially the DOJ is as of now continuing that policy, because that is what is currently the law. Now that doesn't mean they are actively wiretapping people under this administration, I don't know if they are or not, and neither do you, what it means is the DOJ is taking a legal stance in accordance with Bush's law in an ongoing case. It also means the law has yet to be changed, again that doesn't mean it won't be, given time. Three months is hardly long enough to effect the changes we hope to see. One last comment concerning our taxes and Renee's overly dramatic exclamation, I've been paying taxes for many years now, as have all of my friends and family, I have yet to hear of a single person being taxed to DEATH.

Actually Renee I'm a full time college student and my husband and I own a business that fully supports us and our children, but I find it interesting that you would immediately resort to a personal attack when someone points out your hypocrisy concerning taxes. Then again maybe that's just to be expected from someone who attacks a system that supports her as much as anyone else. I pay my taxes and enjoy the infrastructure that helps all of us, I also enjoy knowing that our populace benefits in general from what we pay in. I'd be really interested to see how you or any of us would be able to work the jobs we do have or pursue education without that infrastructure. Of course we can see that, if we just choose to look, as there are numerous other countries that are failing from that very lack. Basically you wouldn't be able to earn your money without what we as a country have built with our community pot, and you're just too ignorant to appreciate that.

Adam and those alike, with an honest heart, I pity you. It must be terrible to hold the contempt and resentment that you have inside- it must feel like a festering wound. I ask that you please discover who the true enemy in your life is and that you become an independent thinker.I went to both tea parties, Newnan and Atlanta. Granted, the Newnan tea party had a litte more political "party" in it- but everyone was incredibly inclusive and friendly. We as a people have got to get on the same page or we will assuredly be divided, conquered, and destroyed. It is heartbreaking to watch our neighbor citizens become party pawns. We have more in common with one another than any party- and if we keep marginalizing one another- we are doing exactly what the party's want. Don't be a pawn, don't be a useful idiot. Hear your neighbor's grievances. If you want to cheer for a "team" go to a ballgame. If you want to live in a prosperous nation- be an independent thinker and always side with what is just and free. If you don't hold on to a party- you have no party leader that you must constantly defend. You will be free to only defend what is truth.

Gee Renee, now who's living under a rock? This country has one of the lowest tax rates in the developed world. Do you have any clue what this country would be like with a completely uneducated and disease ridden population? Are you trying to convince us that you would belong to the small percentage that would be on top in a world like that, and even if you would why would you wish for a country like that? Are you also trying to convince us you don't drive on the roads, no one in your family's past was educated through the public education system, you don't drink clean water and breathe clean air? Do you think all these things, and so many more, are at all possible without a prosperous population contributing to a community pot? Try to think, people, not just react in a knee jerk and idiotic fashion.

That the most acceptable service we render to him is in doing good to his other children. That the soul of man is immortal, and will be treated with justice in another life respecting its conduct in this. These I take to be the fundamental points in all sound religion." P.S. And the list goes on and on and on. Taxed Enough Already!!!! Create a fair tax for everyone!!! This movement really has nothing to do with Democraps or RepubliCAN's. The Newnan event was a great prelude to the big Atlanta Tea Party last night. Inspiring, uplifting, patriotic, encouraging---there are many positive words to describe it! Regarding some of the comments here, I've seen more poor grammar and misspelled words HERE, daily, in Times-Herald comments than I did on signs. A DEMOCRATIC congress has been running the spending for a while now, so pointing the finger at Republicans is only part of the equation. And Elizabeth, it's not really an "A-ha" or "Gotcha" moment that Seabaugh or other Republicans might participate in such a rally. Theirs has long been the party of SMALLER government and LOWER taxes. That was the theme of the Tea Parties. Nearly 20,000 who were in Atlanta last night understood. I'm happy to be counted among them. Last night was about being an AMERICAN. I encourage everyone, regardless of party affiliation, to attend the next one, appropriately scheduled for July 4th!

Enough Blame To Go Around

4/16/2009

As a fiscal conservative, I did not agree with the Bush stimulus. Specifically, I don't agree with Obama's either. Simply, our government spending is out of control. Yet, most liberals and the "uneducated to politics" crowd believe the lies that that the big government is the only way and we can spend our way out of this. The sad fact is that most Americans are so thirsty for honest leadership that they will turn up a glass full of sand and drink before they check to see what is in the glass. If history has proven one thing, its that doing the same wrong thing over and over doesn't work. This type of agenda and spending has been tried before and failed time and time again. I will never accept the fact that we must tax the rich and distribute wealth because someone is not willing to work at the same level I have and continue to do. I will not sit by and allow our constitution to trashed by people who do not love what this country was founded on. I will not lay down any longer! Every revolution has been the result of a great awakening. Ladies and Gentlemen, WELCOME TO THE AWAKENING. God help us as we take our nation back.

They are locusts who have no love for any nation- and once they finish pillaging America, these internationalists will move on to the next prosperous nation. There is NO oversight in what they do & in 1913 our inept Congress relinquished Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution & allowed this den of thieves to control our money! You want to know why there is inflation, why there are bailouts, why anything is said to be "too big to fail"- look to the Federal Reserve. The real "leader" of this nation is the Feds Chairman- not the President. And he's looking out for private banking interests- not any of us- no matter what party.

Check out the roadblocks put up by Barney Frank, Chris Dodd - I could go on - just on the Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac issues. The democrats would rather have our country destroyed than to have supported any efforts to make things better for Americans - private retirement investments and the war in Iraq come to mind - over these past years. This bail out will tax us, our children and our grandchildren to death.

It is not just the last 2 years, 8 years, and it is not only the Democrats and/or the Republicans. First, there is the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977. Another root cause is the Federal Reserve that operates outside governmental control due to the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. The dollar is worth less that 10% against what it was worth in 1913. Then look at Washington leadership’s plan in to aright the economy. This Keynesian influenced concept did not work for FDR in the 1930’s. We need real change with real solutions from someone brave enough to step forward.

Interesting after all the claims that this is a nonpartisan protest that Republican Mitch Seabaugh shows up and talks about taking back Congress and the Presidency. The Republicans had Congress for 6 years and the Presidency for 8, and their mess is why we are having to spend the money we are spending now. A Democrat has been President now for only 3 months and the Democrats were a bare majority for the last 2 years, and already we are starting to see signs of an economic turnaround. I suppose we could have just not bothered to try and repair the Republican damage. I wonder what you would be protesting then, or if you would have time to protest while the economy continued to crumble.
