8-county authority in works

By Jeff Bishop

The Times-Herald

In a bid to attract more industry to the West Georgia region, Coweta County development officials will be joining with officials from surrounding counties to create a new joint development authority.

"There are eight counties looking to form a loose-knit group," said David Brown, chairman of the Coweta County Development Authority. "We are looking at putting together a group to promote West Georgia as a region."

Coweta is already part of a joint Coweta-Fayette-Meriwether Development Authority, but this new one would be more expansive, Brown said. The Coweta-Fayette-Meriwether development authority will meet Nov. 13 at 11:30 a.m. at the local development authority office. Mike Barber is the Coweta representative on the board.

Brown said that counties have come to realize that what's good for one county can be good for surrounding counties, as well.

"Just look at the NCR expansion in Peachtree City," Brown said. "That's been good for a lot of people here. ... We're going to bond together and try to promote West Georgia."

While Coweta's unemployment rate hovers at around 10 percent, other counties in the West Georgia region are worse. Heard County's unemployment rate is 12.4, Meriwether's is 13.2, Carroll's is 10.8, Troup's is 12.9, and Spalding's is 15.4.

In other business, the Fanning Institute will hold basic and advanced development authority board member training on Nov. 18 and 19 in Decatur. Topics will include the importance of economic development plans.

Executive Assistant Brenda Washington said she has met with Clover Electronics, EGO North America, PetSmart Distribution Center, SYGMA Networking, and Oldcastle Glass this month.

"Everyone is hanging in there," she said.
