The rain and inclement weather hitting Newnan and the north Georgia area has made it necessary for city officials to cancel the Newnan Independence Day parade.

“Due to the strong likelihood of inclement weather, resulting in safety concerns for parade entries, attendees, volunteers, and staff, the City of Newnan’s Fourth of July Parade has been canceled,” said city Business Development Director Hasco W. Craver IV on Wednesday. “The parade will not be rescheduled for a later date,” he said.

Craver said the city urges all community members to attend the Rotary Club of Newnan’s annual fireworks display, which has been rescheduled for July 13, at Newnan High School’s Drake Stadium. The fireworks event will begin at 6 p.m. The community celebration is a free event.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Coweta County and much of north Georgia through Friday morning, with rainfall of as much as 4-6 inches likely, according to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

The forecast shows a 100 percent chance of heavy rain today, and a 90 percent chance of heavy rain tonight.

Approximately 4.5 inches of rain fell in Newnan on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Rotary Club officials made the decision to postpone the fireworks show.

“It’s a safety issue, 100 percent,” said Walt Thompson, Newnan Rotary president.

Thompson also said that the Rotary Club had to consider that the football field at Drake Stadium couldn’t be used if it rained. Volunteer workers would have to fight the rain all day, and it would make setup difficult since most of it would be done Thursday morning.

On July 13, attendees may arrive at the stadium at Newnan High School on LaGrange Street starting at 6 p.m.

This year’s fireworks extravaganza will be the 28th annual Independence Day celebration at Drake Stadium. The annual event is sponsored by the Newnan Rotary Club, Coweta County, the City of Newnan, Coweta County Schools and Coweta businesses, as a gift to the community.
