Husband charged

Wife attacked in front of children

by WES MAYER

A man was arrested Tuesday after admitting to hitting his wife in front of her two children.

Around 1:30 p.m., Newnan Police Department Officer Sharwynne Rhein responded to a call in reference to an assault at 68 Inverness Ave. When Rhein arrived, she found the woman who had called police, Kourtenay Smith, at the home with a bruised and swollen left eye, a knot on the top of her head and a swollen wrist.

Kourtenay told the officer that her husband, whom she is in the process of divorcing, Mark Eric Smith, 35, came to her house and assaulted her when she told him to leave. Kourtenay said that she was punched in the face and head and was thrown to the ground. Smith said she might have then blacked out, and could not say how many more times Eric hit her.

She told officers that this was not the first time Eric has been violent toward her, and his violent actions have been getting worse.

Kourtenay added that her two sons, ages 5 and 6, witnessed the assault and were screaming for Eric to stop. Eric fled the scene before officers arrived, and Officer Rhein was able to make contact with him on his cell and got him to return to the scene.

When Eric returned 20 minutes later, he admitted to officers that he hit Kourtenay three or four times, saying that she had first told him to leave and pushed him. He then demonstrated to Officer Rhein how he hit Smith in the head while she was on the ground. Eric said he fled after he heard the boys screaming at him to not kill their mother.

Mark Eric Smith was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and cruelty to children in the third degree. Kourtenay Smith was taken to the Piedmont Newnan Hospital emergency room by a family member.
