Drug suspect arrested during traffic stop

by WES MAYER

A man with six outstanding warrants for drug charges was arrested early Tuesday morning after attempting to flee Coweta authorities and throw illegal drugs out of the vehicle's window.

A Coweta County Sheriff's Office deputy initially pulled out behind Marcello Penson's vehicle about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday due to a broken taillight, but Penson turned and accelerated into a neighborhood down Green Tree Drive, according to a sheriff's office report.

The deputy turned on his patrol car lights and soon found the vehicle parked in the grass with its lights off at 20 Marco Street.

The deputy then got out of his vehicle with his weapon drawn and ordered Penson to show his hands, according to the deputy's report. Penson refused to do so and would not follow the deputy's instructions. A female passenger, Saryea Hughley, was also in the car.

Other deputies arrived and they were able to remove and handcuff Penson, the report said. Hughley was also taken from the car and smelled of alcohol and marijuana. She said that the vehicle was hers and allowed it to be searched.

A homemade bong for marijuana was found under the front seat of the car, and a bag of suspected marijuana was discovered about 10 feet away from the passenger's side of the car. Soon after, a small bag of suspected cocaine was discovered in the middle of the street in front of 42 Green Tree Dr.

Both Penson and Hughley were arrested for a misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Penson also faces numerous charges including fleeing a police officer, obstruction and a felony possession of cocaine, in addition to his six outstanding warrants, according to Coweta County Jail records.
