County putting contractor back to work on intersection

by SARAH FAY CAMPBELL

The improved intersection at Macedonia Road and Ga. Hwy. 16 West has been open to traffic for months now.

But construction barrels are still plentiful. That’s because Coweta County officials are not satisfied with the pavement and are having the contractor come back to do remedial work.

The intersection opened in its final configuration in November, said Patricia Palmer, Coweta County spokeswoman. “However, there have been a couple of outstanding issues,” she said.

The first was a utility conflict that kept the guardrail from being installed for a few months, which was resolved in late March, said Palmer, and the guardrail was completed in April.

The other issue is with the “quality of the ride and the finish of the top layer of asphalt.”

The county would not accept the project without the quality of the ride being improved, Palmer said.

The contractor, R.J. Haynie and Associates, came out to fix the issue on April 22. However, the fix wasn’t satisfactory.

“Deficiencies with the asphalt topping still remain,” said Palmer.

The county’s Transportation and Engineering Department met with the contractors on Monday to work out a plan of action, according to Director Todd Handley.

“They are going to be getting us something in the next few days,” Handley said.

There are some irregular areas of pavement, and they will have to be milled out and replaced, Handley said. That work will require some lane closures.

The project includes turning lanes on both Hwy. 16 and Macedonia, and the relocation of Macedonia Trail.

The county has tried to get a traffic light approved, but the Georgia Department of Transportation says one is not warranted at that intersection.

The contract for the project was awarded last May, and the contract amount was $504,752.
