The Chattahoochee River was out of its banks at the county’s Riverside Park Monday. By Wednesday the waters had receded and the park reopened.

Coweta County’s Riverside Park on Georgia Highway 16 West, Carrollton Highway, has reopened after it was closed Sunday because of rising waters in the Chattahoochee River.

On Wednesday, Riverside Park was reopened after the park was cleaned following high water levels that were present through the beginning of the week, said Tom Corker, county communications director.

County officials note that the river level remains higher than normal. Boaters will have to use the river at their own risk, officials said.

Also, runoff from the weekend rains raised the bacteria level in the river.

Upstream, E. Coli levels at Medlock Bridge Road north of Atlanta Wednesday were 1,783, up from 588 on Tuesday. Levels had gone down slightly on Paces Ferry Road, to 416. On Tuesday, they were 1,358.

“The monitors for E. Coli are north of Atlanta,” said Tim Banks, park manager at Chattahoochee Bend State Park, not far south of the Highway 16 boat ramp. “For here, if the river is high, E. Coli will be high,” he said.

“Always be cautious with the water” and thoroughly wash any cuts or wounds that come into contact with river water,” he said.

Banks added that the park will not rent any canoes “during any time there is a risk to the users from high water.”

The river level had dropped significantly since cresting at 16.2 feet Monday morning. Flood stage is 15 feet. At 2:15 Wednesday afternoon, the river level at the Hwy. 16 bridge was 7.15 feet.
