Goodwill sets programs on the job search, financial literacy

May 5 - 11 is Goodwill Week, and the Newnan Goodwill Career Center is celebrating with a week full of events focused on employment help and financial literacy. 

"This year, we plan to strengthen the community by providing a convenient, free opportunity for employment exploration through the week," said Stephanie Glenn, manager of the Newnan Career Center, located inside the Newnan Goodwill store at 228 Bullsboro Drive. 

Tuesday's information session will be Overcoming Barriers to Employment with a "Not-So-Hot" Background. The session will be presented by Rick Henderson, who is the ToppStep regional coordinator with the Georgia Department of Labor. ToppStep is a state program designed to help parolees, probationers, and ex-convicts find employment. 

On Monday, staffing agency Industrial Staffing will hold a job fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The company is hiring for industrial cleaning, material handling, office and driving positions in Franklin and West Point. 

Allegiance Staffing will host a job fair Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon for jobs in the LaGrange, West Point, and Franklin areas. 

From noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Best Bank will host a seminar on budgeting and finances. 

Thursday's event will be an "education" fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include representatives from the University of West Georgia, West Georgia Technical College, Village Samaritan and Georgia Driving Academy. 

Goodwill Industries is also holding a "virtual career fair" May 6-8. For more information, visit www.goodwill.org/week . 

Goodwill Week has been celebrated each year since 1951. The week began as a way to encourage local Goodwill agencies to educate their communities about their mission. The mission of Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers, which covers Coweta County, is job placement and training. 

Goodwill Career Centers are funded by the sale of items at Goodwill stores. The career centers offer job seekers the use of computers, phones and fax machines, as well as help with job searches and workshops.

Soon, Coweta County will have two career centers. The new "Newnan East" Goodwill store and career center is set to open June 20 in a former grocery store on Georgia Highway 34 East at Highway 154 at Thomas Crossroads.
