Several plans in works for Coweta

This 73,000-square-foot building going up in the Newnan Pavilion shopping center will be the home of Academy Sports and Outdoors.

“We hear the economy is a little sluggish. That is not what we are seeing. We are seeing the economy turning around.”

That’s what engineer Neal Spradlin told the Coweta County Commissioners earlier this month while seeking rezoning for a 15-acre tract at the corner of Poplar Road and the Newnan Crossing Bypass. 

The plans are to have various medical office buildings in the 11.4-acre portion of the site that is zoned Office-Institutional, with small commercial businesses such as a drug store and supporting businesses on the 3.8-acre portion zoned C-3, Commercial Retail. 

That development is still in the early stages, but there are a few other things that are further along. 

The city of Newnan is in the process of annexing 4.9 acres along Bullsboro Drive and Parkway North. The land formerly was home to the Motel 6 and Phillips 66 gas station. The property is owned by Newnan Investment LLC and will be the site of a new Nissan dealership. 

There have been rumors the former John Cullen Dodge facility on Hwy. 34 East at Intentional Park will become a Honda dealership, but there has been no visible movement on that project. 

There are plans for a Town Place Suites by Marriott on property at Ashley Park across from Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. 

Late last year, Marriott company officials said construction would begin toward the end of the first quarter of the year.

It’s not the only proposed hotel. Coweta County just approved some variances for a proposed Microtel Inn and Suites in the Shenandoah Industrial Park. 

In March, the city of Newnan annexed a six-acre tract off Lower Fayetteville Road. The developer intends to build a 45,000-square-foot commercial and office space complex. 

And the new owners of the Fischer Crossings property at Highway 34/54 in east Coweta near Peachtree City are working through the steps to change the site plan and conditions on the property, which was reviewed as a “development of regional impact” so that they can restart development of the property, which currently has just one tenant, NCG Cinemas.
