Coweta County showing signs of recovery

There are several visible signs of economic recovery in the Newnan area, with three new businesses under construction, a new automobile dealership recently opening, and a major renovation under way at a department store.

A new Newnan Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership has opened on Hwy. 34 East. 

Just west of it, there is a flurry of new construction at the Newnan Pavilion shopping center. 

A large new concrete building under construction at the shopping center will be the new Academy Sports and Outdoors. 

A portion of the strip center along the western side of Newnan Pavilion was demolished to make way for the 73,000-square-foot sporting goods and outdoor store. Construction work is also being done on the parking lot for the store. 

Store management has been in town since Monday in construction trailers, and officials are accepting applications on site. The company plans to hire more than 100 employees. 

Next door, workers are turning the end of the strip center into the new home of the Newnan JoAnn fabric and craft store. The store is set to open in August. 

In Ashley Park, crews worked this week on a grading project for a new outparcel building and parking lot. It will be the future home of a Jarad jewelry store. 

Across the street, a redesign is taking place at the Newnan Target store. The project will add a fresh produce section to the store, as well as a Starbucks to replace the former snack bar. 

In Thomas Crossroads, work is nearly complete on the transformation of the long-vacant Save Rite grocery building into a new Goodwill store and career center.

“We’re definitely seeing an increase in construction-related activity in the city and county,” said Tracy Dunnavant, planning director for the city of Newnan. “Which is a good thing.”
