Former Grantville employee sentenced in theft case

by Alex McRae

Former City of Grantville employee Angela Glass was sentenced to 10 years probation after pleading guilty to stealing more than $20,000 from the city.

The sentence was imposed in proceedings April 19 by  Coweta Superior Court Judge Dennis Blackmon at the Coweta County Justice Center in Newnan.

Glass entered an Alford plea, under which the defendant does not admit to committing the act, but agrees that the prosecution could likely prove the charge.

In addition to the 10-year probation, Glass was ordered to perform 80 hours of community service and pay restitution in the amount of $20,155.90.

Glass began working for the City of Grantville in 2008 and resigned in June 2012 to accept another job. Soon after Glass’ resignation the Grantville Police Department requested a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe after inconsistencies were found in city financial records.

The GBI investigation established probable cause that Glass was responsible for the theft of approximately $21,000 during the two-and-a-half-year period preceding her June 1, 2012, resignation.

Glass was arrested Sept. 6, 2012, by GBI Special Agent Larry Duren and was booked into the Coweta County Jail on one count of theft by taking. According to the GBI, Glass was “responsible for financial tasks that included, but were not limited to, bank deposits, payroll deductions and paying employee insurance premiums.”

At the time of the arrest, Grantville Mayor Jim Sells told The Newnan Times-Herald, “She was a good employee before this. We never had any problems, she was a very good employee.”
