Coleman earns McGraw Award

Western Elementary School student Joselyn Coleman received the Norah McGraw Outstanding Achievement Award as the Coweta County Special Olympics Spring Games – in which 336 athletes participated – got under way at Newnan High School’s Drake Stadium Wednesday.

Coleman has made “amazing progress” this year, according to Jim McGraw, who presented the award named for his late sister, a special education teacher in Coweta schools and strong advocate for Special Olympics.

“Her overall willingness to do her best and never give up are traits my sister looked for in her students,” McGraw said of Coleman, who participates in bowling, track and field, and the horseback riding program at CORRAL - Coweta Organization for Riding, Rehabilitation and Learning.

Teresa Bush was named winner of the “Kelly Award” for Outstanding Adult Volunteer, presented by Coweta County Special Olympics coordinator Kelly Abercrombie.

Both awards were presented Wednesday morning following the Parade of Athletes, which featured volunteers, mascots, cheerleaders and bus drivers marching alongside athletes. Forest Bolton and Justin Wasil, cyclists who have qualified to compete in the 2014 National Special Olympic Games, led the Olympic Oath.

Newnan High’s Jimpson Rosser, who was the Special Olympics of Georgia 2012 Athlete of the Year, lit the Olympic Torch to open the games, which featured track and field events and awards for special needs athletes from all Coweta County public schools, Burwell, Rutledge and Heard County schools.
