The new Senoia Branch of the Coweta County Public Library System will be celebrating its one-year anniversary May 18 with special storytelling, a presentation of “The Wizard of Oz,” a workshop for kids and salsa dancing.

The Senoia Branch of Coweta County Public Library System will be celebrating its one-year anniversary at the 148 Pylant Street location May 18 with a day full of activities.

The day will include a visit by a guest storyteller, a build something workshop, a visit by a theatrical company doing a production of “The Wizard of Oz” and late afternoon salsa dancing on the patio.

Senoia resident Totsie McKnight dreamed of a library for Senoia and worked for one.

She helped gather books and raise funds for a small library in a storefront downtown years ago. Last year she helped cut the ribbon for the new, permanent library facility. “I think it’s awesome,” said McKnight, who – along with Sue Wells – represented Senoia’s original library board at the 2012 opening ceremonies and the reception that followed.

McKnight talked about what people want when they move to a community. “They check out the churches. They check out the schools. The third thing is the library. That’s the cultural center,” she said.

The upcoming celebration activities will commence at 1:30 p.m. on May 18 with a performance by renowned storyteller Tracy Walker in the Branch Meeting Room, said Marie J. Vielot, library manager for the Grantville and Senoia branches.

At 2:15 p.m., the Peachtree City Home Depot store team will bring the Home Depot Kid’s Workshop to the Senoia community under a big tent in the library’s front parking lot. At the event, which lasts about an hour, youngsters will be invited to build a project.

At 3:30 p.m., the library will be host for A Company of Friends Theatrical Productions, which will present “The Wizard of Oz” under the big tent in the front parking lot.

To close out the day, Gotta Dance Now of Peachtree City will offer a free salsa dance class for everyone on the library’s patio.
