Yamaha seeks renewal of air permit

by Sarah Fay Campbell

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s Air Protection Branch is currently holding a public comment period on the Title V permit renewal for Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation in Newnan. The facility is located at 1000 Hwy. 34 East.

Permits have to be renewed every five years.

Yamaha’s current Title V permit was issued in March 2008. In February 2009, a permit amendment was issued to cover a new plastic parts spray line, including paint spray booths, flash-off tunnels, and a regenerative thermal oxidizer. There was an “off permit change” in June 2009 for a pilot-scale test of 2010 paint colors.

The local Yamaha plant, which makes golf carts, Wave Runners and all-terrain vehicles, is a “major source” under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “New Source Review” regulations because it has the potential to emit more than 25 tons of volatile organic compounds annually. It’s considered a minor source for other regulated air pollutants.

Conditions in the permits are set so that the facility will avoid the full New Source Review regulations related to the expansion in 2009.

The public comment period ends April 29. The application number is TV-21404.

Comments must be submitted in writing to the Air Protection Branch, 4244 International Parkway, Atlanta Tradeport Suite 120, Atlanta, Georgia, 30354. Members of the public can also request a public hearing be held on the permit renewal.

After the end of the comment period, there will be a 45-day review of the draft permit by the U.S. EPA.
