Georgia Power warns customers of scam

Georgia Power officials are warning the public of a new scam that has recently victimized a number of customers.

The scam involves criminals posing as Georgia Power employees and defrauding businesses and residential customers by demanding they immediately pay or their power will be disconnected, according to a statement from Georgia Power. Victims have reported being called by the scammers who either asked for credit card information or asked them to purchase a prepaid debit card and provide that card’s information.

In other cases, victims reported the scammers visited their residence or business in person or asked the customers to meet somewhere other than a Georgia Power business location to collect the payment in cash.

According to company officials, Georgia Power employees will never ask customers to provide credit or prepaid debit card information over the phone, and employees are not sent into the field to collect payments. Customers will also never be asked to pay at a location that is not an authorized Georgia Power payment location.

If a customer’s account is past due, Georgia Power will contact the customer’s primary phone with a recorded message or send a letter requesting the customer to call Georgia Power back. Any employee who needs to visit a customer’s home or business for a service issue will be in uniform, and they will present a badge with their photo, their name and the Georgia Power logo.

Georgia Power asks any customer who has received a suspicious call from someone demanding immediate payment to call Georgia Power’s 24-hour customer service line at 888-660-5890. Customers may also contact customer service at www.georgiapower.com or visit an authorized business office.
