State public hearing for Common Core on Tuesday

by Celia Shortt

One of the big educational issues in Coweta County – Common Core – will be the subject of a state Board of Education public hearing next week.

The state board is holding the hearing for the 13th Congressional District on Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Alexander High School in Douglasville. The purpose is to hear comments from any interested citizens and educators within the district about the “performance and problems of public education.”

For Cowetans, Common Core was a major topic in the recent school board elections. When asked about Common Core and whether it should comprise the entire school curriculum, both District 3 candidate, Jane Horne, and District 4 candidate, Linda Menk, said it should not.

“I don’t think it should be Common Core period,” said Horne in her response. “I think when the state of Georgia gets involved with social studies and science, more people will be upset.”

“If it were up to me, I would rip Common Core out by the roots,” Menk responded to the question.

District 3 incumbent candidate, Harry Mullins, took a different approach in his response to the question.

“Common Core is an emotional issue around the country right now … I encourage everyone to do their homework … research it … find out where it started and make your own decision,” he said.

“I don’t make the decision on the standards,” he added. “They are given to us by the state of Georgia to adopt.”

Both Menk and Mullins went on to win their districts for the election.

The topic of Common Core also came up at the Georgia state House and Senate Education committee’s listening sessions held at different locations throughout the state in October of last year. The sessions began at the Coweta School System’s Centre for Performing and Visual Arts and allowed educators and citizens to bring their questions and concerns about education in Georgia to members of the Georgia legislature.
