Authorities still looking for thief after pursuit, crash

by Wes Mayer

Coweta County authorities are still searching for a man suspected of numerous thefts who fled on foot following a brief but high speed car chase around midnight Monday.

Around 11:52 p.m., with the help of his vehicle’s tag reader, a Coweta County deputy identified a 2006 BMW 525i as a stolen vehicle out of Atlanta, said Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. When the deputy attempted to pull over the vehicle, the driver sped off down Happy Valley Circle at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

On the 1400-block of the road, the driver sped around a curve, lost control, drove through the grass and collided with several trees. The force of the impact caused the vehicle to travel back into the road and the engine to detach from the rest of the car.

The driver, now known as Antonio Terrell Johnson, 34, managed to flee from the crash on foot, and he is still wanted by authorities. There was a front seat passenger in the vehicle. Kelly Davenport, 24, who suffered from a laceration to her head as a result of the accident, was taken into custody. According to Yarbrough, she has been cooperative during the investigation so far, and has not been charged, but she may still be facing charges.

After the crash, authorities found a large assortment of items in duffel bags inside and around the wrecked vehicle. These bags contained numerous cell phones, laptop computers, cameras, gift cards, SIM cards, credit cards, antique silverware and rare and foreign coins – all most likely stolen property. Four firearms were also recovered from the vehicle and two of these firearms are believed to be stolen as well, Yarbrough said – one is a Glock pistol belonging to the Atlanta Police Department.

The BMW was also stolen out of Fulton County, and county investigators are working to contact the owners of the cell phones and laptops. Johnson is wanted for numerous counts of theft by receiving, and the case is still under investigation.

Investigators are also looking into a vehicle that was reported stolen that same night from a home near the scene of the accident.
