‘Rio 2’ on big screen at park Friday

Main Street Newnan is holding its second Screen on the Green outdoor family movie Friday as part of August’s First Friday event, “Alive after 5.”

This Screen on the Green will feature “Rio 2” at 8 p.m., and will be shown at Newnan’s First Avenue Park. Also part of the First Friday festivities will be a live performance by singer-songwriter Andy Lees. Lees will be performing on Newnan’s Court Square from 5 to 8 p.m.

Coming later in August will be Main Street Newnan’s Sunrise on the Square 5k race. It will take place on Aug. 30, the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, and will follow the same route as last year. It will also feature a one-mile run and a tot trot. The 5k will begin at 8 a.m., and applications are available at the Main Street Newnan website.

In addition to bringing events to downtown Newnan this summer, Main Street Newnan is finalizing the map for its downtown kiosk project. The kiosks will list downtown businesses, as well as provide directional information for visitors and pedestrians.

“I am certain that all businesses located within the nine-block downtown area will be named,” said Newnan’s Business Development Hasco W Craver IV. “We're having difficulty listing those businesses on the periphery. We're trying our best to accommodate as many downtown locations as possible.”

Craver said the kiosks have been installed and are awaiting the map, which Main Street is working to complete.
