Three Rivers plans to relocate development office

Officials with Three Rivers Regional Commission are looking at locations in Coweta County for the regional workforce development office.

“Monday we looked at some properties and plan on looking at more,” said Lanier Boatright, Three Rivers director.

Boatright first spoke publicly about moving the workforce development offices from Griffin to Coweta last month after the Three Rivers Regional Council met at the Walter B. Hill Community Center in Turin.

The team from Three Rivers has looked at more than one location in Coweta, including some unfinished office space.

In June, Boatright said the current office in Griffin must be vacated when its lease ends. Commission officials will be looking for “something that will meet our needs and is not too expensive,” he said.

Three Rivers also is looking for companies to provide training and support for young people entering the workforce. The commission ran an advertisement about the issuance of a Request for Proposals for youth services in the region.

An estimated $850,00-$985,000 will be available for programs in the area between April 1, 2015, and March 31, 2016. The 10-county area includes Coweta, Butts, Carroll, Heard, Lamar, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding, Troup and Upson.

Nine potential companies attended the bidders’ conference at the commission’s offices in Griffin.

“Companies will provide on-the-job training for youth” ages 14-21, Boatright said. Services are provided for those still in school and also out of school. In addition to teaching traditional job skills, Boatright said there also is an emphasis on being on time, speaking and dressing appropriate for work and other “soft skills.”

The 2014 program currently in progress, has about 130 participants, according to Boatright.
