Georgia students improving in EOCT scores

Georgia students improved in more than half of the 2014 End of Course Tests and are showing significant improvement over last years’ results.

“Students and teachers are getting more and more comfortable with our standards and the results are showing it,” said Dr. John Barge, school superintendent for Georgia. “The comparable EOCTs demonstrate a positive trend.”

In the results released earlier this week by the Georgia Department of Education, students improved on six of the eight EOCTs, as compared to the 2013 results. The tests on which more students met or exceeded expectations are: coordinate algebra, economics, biology, physical science, ninth grade literature and composition, and American literature and composition.

The results for districts and individual schools have yet to be released. GaDOE said the district results will be available no later than July 16 and school results no later than July 30.

“System and school-level results for end-of-course tests administered in the 2013-14 school year have not yet been released,” said Dean Jackson, public information officer for the Coweta County School System. “We look forward to seeing this year’s results from the fall and winter Coweta County semesters.”

In the 2013 EOCT results, Coweta County high school students had a higher passage rate on all the tests than their state counterparts. Last year, they also met or exceeded the tests’ standards at a higher rate than the year previous in five courses, including Ninth Grade Literature and Composition, American Literature and Composition, Mathematics II: Geometry/Algebra II/Statistics, Biology and Physical Science.

Dr. Barge said the positive trend for the 2014 EOCT results should be encouraging.

“When results on almost all comparable tests increase then we should be encouraged,” he said. “However, we do know that the more demanding expectations on our new tests could bring similar results to what we’ve seen the last two years in math.”

The Analytic Geometry EOCT was first offered in 2014, and 35 percent of Georgia students met or exceeded the standard for it. In 2013, the Coordinate Algebra EOCT was offered for the first time. In 2014, the percentage of students who met or exceeded expectations for that test increased by three percentage points.

2014 EOCT results summary:

• Eighty-eight percent of Georgia’s students met or exceeded the standard for Ninth Grade Literature & Composition. This is an increase of two percentage points when compared to spring 2013.

• Ninety-three percent of Georgia’s students met or exceeded the standard for American Literature & Composition. This is an increase of two percentage points when compared to spring 2013.

• Forty percent of Georgia’s students met or exceeded the standard for Coordinate Algebra. This is an increase of three percentage points when compared to spring 2013.

• Thirty-five percent of Georgia’s students met or exceeded the standard for Analytic Geometry. The Winter 2013 EOCT was the first administration for Analytic Geometry.

• Seventy-five percent of Georgia’s students met or exceeded the standard for Biology. This is an increase of one percentage point when compared to spring 2013.

• Eighty-five percent of Georgia’s students met or exceeded the standard for Physical Science. This is an increase of two percentage points when compared to spring 2013.

• Seventy-three percent of Georgia’s students met or exceeded the standard for U.S. History. This represents no change from spring 2013.

• Eighty-one percent of Georgia’s students met or exceeded the standard for Economics/Business/Free Enterprise. This is an increase of two percentage points when compared to spring 2013.

Starting next school year, all students in third through 12th grades will take the Georgia Milestones test. This new testing system is one consistent program across those grades. It is not a series of individual tests.

To better gauge students’ content mastery in English language arts and math, the test will include open-ended questions. There will be some exceptions and specific testing accommodations for special education students. The test will be administered completely online by the fifth year of implementation.

Georgia Milestones will also be aligned to the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards in English language arts and mathematics and to the Georgia Performance Standards in science and social studies.
