Outdoor store to locate off Newnan Crossing Bypass

by Celia Shortt

Hunting and outdoor store Gander Mountain will be opening a retail store near JC Penney off Newnan Crossing Bypass.

“The Gander Mountain project, which includes the location of a 51,000-square-foot retail location along the bypass, has initiated site preparation and will begin construction in the near future,” said Newnan Business Development Director Hasco W. Craver IV.

Craver made the announcement at a Newnan Development Authority meeting on Monday.

Gander Mountain is a regional retailer that sells a large variety of hunting and outdoor equipment. It currently has locations throughout the midwest and eastern part of the United States.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the development authority approved a bond resolution, allowing Community Health Services for Georgia to take over and renovate Avalon Health Care.

Avalon Health Care is a 117-bed skilled nursing facility on Spring Street in Newnan.

“By acquiring Avalon, we can balance the beds between them and Newnan Health to approximately 40 beds per nursing station and improve the quality of life for those who reside there,” said Ronnie Rollins, chief executive officer for Community Health Services of Georgia.

Newnan Health and Rehabilitation is located on East Broad Street in Newnan.

“When this is done, we believe Newnan and Coweta County will have the best facilities in the state of Georgia,” he added.

Since it is a bond resolution, there is no liability for the development authority or for the city of Newnan, officials said.

“The development authority will be taking title of the project in name only and issuing bonds to cover the cost of the transaction, while Community Health (through a lease agreement) pays the debt on the bonds, leaving no financial liability on the development authority and/or the City of Newnan,” said Craver in an email after the meeting. “This project will result in the complete renovation of the Avalon facility as well as the organization’s ability to better serve their residents.”

Rollins said operations will remain where they are, and the renovation to take place is for the overall goal of improving service and care.

Also at Monday’s meeting:

• Craver reported the University of West Georgia Newnan Project remains on track to open in January 2015.

• Newnan City Attorney C. Bradford Sears said a state hearing for a Certificate of Need for a proposed new psychiatric hospital at the site of the old Newnan Hospital/Coweta General facilities on Hospital Road will begin on June 23.

• Tamarkus Cook was sworn as the development authority’s newest member.

• Craver reported the Marriott Towne Place Suites, being constructed near Atlanta Fitness at the south end of the Ashley Park retail center, will be an 89-bed hotel.

• Craver reported that the Cancer Center Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Regional Medical Center’s expansion at their facility between Newnan Crossing Bypass and Interstate 85 is continuing.
