Around 75 people registered for the Coweta County Drug Court 5K – Race for a Drug Free Community. The race began at 8 a.m. and runners sped to Newnan High School and finished the race back at the Court Square. The top runners in each age group were awarded medals and all funds raised went to support medical services for participants in the drug court and were also donated to the Coweta Samaritan Clinic.

Coweta County Drug Court held its fourth annual 5K race Saturday, and close to 75 people registered for the event.

The 5K “Race for a Drug Free Community” began at 8 a.m. on Newnan’s Court Square, and runners raced down to Newnan High School before looping back to end at the historic courthouse. Gold and silver medals were awarded to the top runners in each age group, said Jennifer Barnett, coordinator of the Coweta County Drug Court.

“Our staff and participants have worked hard in putting the race together,” Barnett said. “The money raised by having the race will support medical services needed for participants, and we donate to Coweta Samaritan Clinic as well.”

At the race, the Drug Court staff also held a raffle for gift certificates and other merchandise from local stores and restaurants.

The annual 5K race is a part of the Coweta County Drug Court participants’ community service requirements. Participants of the drug court, all convicted of drug-related crimes in the county, are required to pay monthly fees to support the court, be regularly drug tested, attend counseling, and meet with Judge Joe Wyant twice a month. Participant must also work full-time and further their education by receiving their GED if they did not graduate college.

Among sponsors for this year’s race were REASON Mobile Welding, McKoon’s, Progressive Heating and Air, By Grace Hauling, Arnall Grocery, Fine Lines Art and Framing, Grace Harbour, WingYard, Southtowne, Maw & Paw Kettyle, Kam, Ebersbach & Lewis, Newnan Bankruptcy.
