Light near Thomas Crossroads close to operational

by Sarah Fay Campbell

Only a few “punch list” items remain before the new traffic signal on Hwy. 34 East at Kroger can be inspected and ready for operation.

Work is nearly complete on the new traffic signal on Hwy. 34 East near Thomas Crossroads.

The new signal will make left turns onto Hwy. 34 out of the Kroger shopping center much safer. Currently, the signal lights are covered with bags.

A signal has been proposed at the intersection for years. In April 2011, the Coweta County Board of Commissioners was told that the owner of the shopping center wanted to install the light and would cover all costs related to the installation, as well as the monthly utility costs, with the Georgia Department of Transportation taking over maintenance and operations.

A permit for the signal construction was issued on Aug. 19, and grading work began on Oct. 15, according to Kimberly Larson, regional spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The poles were installed in January and the signals were placed in February, Larson said. Work on the sensor loops began the last week in February. The contractors began work on the “punch list” on March 12, Larson said.

“Just a few more items need to be addressed before we turn it over to the Traffic Signal Department for their inspection,” she said.

Once the signal passes inspection, it can go into flash mode. Message signs, which will inform drivers of when the signal will go into operation, were located near the intersection on Wednesday.
