Two semi trucks collided on I-85 south of Newnan Tuesday night, sending one truck up in flames. A passerby is credited with pulling the injured driver from the burning truck.

Two semi trucks were involved in an accident in the southbound lanes of I-85 between the Newnan and Moreland exits in Coweta County Tuesday night, and a segment of the interstate was closed until early Wednesday morning.

Authorities were dispatched to the accident around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to public safety radio traffic. Between exits 41 and 47 of the highway, one semi truck collided with the back of another causing it to hit the guardrail and burst into flames, according to initial information from those at the scene.

According to authorities, a passerby who witnessed the accident stopped and ran to the burning truck to find the driver hanging out of the front windshield. The passerby rescued the man, likely saving his life, and the driver was soon transported to an Atlanta hospital by helicopter with burn injuries.

Emergency responders with the Coweta County Fire Department, Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol, Highway Emergency Response Operators and Rhino Services arrived to clear the accident. Interstate traffic was rerouted through Newnan via exit 41 while the highway was closed, and authorities said the highway was expected to reopen by 6 a.m.
