A Coweta County man arrested last April during “Operation Guarding Innocence” pleaded guilty Friday to numerous charges of sexual exploitation of children.

Donald Matthew Colbert, 26, was indicted on 21 counts of sexual exploitation of children – possession of child pornography. On Friday, he pleaded guilty to all charges, and, according to Coweta Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Kevin McMurry, counts 10 through 18 were dismissed in a plea deal.

After Colbert pleaded guilty in Coweta County Superior Court to the remaining 12 counts, Judge Dennis Blackmon sentenced him to 40 years in prison with 12 to serve.

Colbert surrendered to authorities last April following the three-month statewide investigation headed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force – “Operation Guarding Innocence.” During the operation, which took place from January to March 2013, authorities made 47 arrests on 87 counts related to possession of child pornography, seized more than 200 hard drives, smartphones, thumb drives and other digital devices, and completed 78 searches throughout Georgia, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office is one of the 47 agencies that participated in the 2013 operation. Since the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force was formed in 2002, there have been 974 arrests in Georgia.
