Walter Lee Ponder Jr.

The man believed to be responsible for shooting another man multiple times in a north Coweta neighborhood over the weekend is now in custody.

The suspect, Walter Lee Ponder Jr., was located in Carrollton following an independent investigation, said Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. Ponder was taken into custody around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. He was charged with violation of probation, but will likely face more charges, at least aggravated battery, following further investigation, according to Yarbrough.

Ponder is a suspect in the early Saturday shooting of Vantorious Krishad Dixon on Howard Hughes Road, Yarbrough said. Not only did Ponder shoot Dixon, but he also ran over Dixon with his vehicle. Because of multiple injuries, Dixon has been in and out of surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and is still in intensive care.

Around 2:52 a.m. Saturday, authorities with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 400-block of Howard Hughes Road in reference to gunshots. When deputies arrived, they found a party going on at the home and Dixon lying in the street, Yarbrough said. Emergency medical units arrived on scene and transported Dixon to Grady.

According to Yarbrough, the party at the home was meant to raise money for the funeral services of two men, Darian Person and Gregory Marquel Anderson, who were killed in a shooting on Hill Street in Newnan on March 25.

Person’s and Anderson’s funerals were held Sunday.
