A man suspected of stealing multiple items in the Moreland and Grantville areas of south Coweta County last year was arrested by authorities on Monday.

Last year, when the Pecan Grove mobile home park on South Highway 29 in Moreland began shutting down, the homes were stripped of scrap metal, which was piled into multiple trailers on the property, said Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.

The Coweta County Fire Department also used the empty mobile homes for training.

According to Yarbrough, during this time, some of the scrap metal began to disappear from the trailers on the property, and, one day, firefighters noticed a suspicious vehicle on the property that fled when authorities attempted to approach it.

Authorities later installed an automatic camera like those used to record wildlife.

Through the investigation, the suspected scrap metal thief was identified as Ykim Amenra Young, 22.

Yarbrough said Young was stealing the metal to sell it to scrap yards.

Young was also identified as a suspect in two air conditioner thefts from homes on the 100-block of St. Charles Place in Grantville last year, according to Grantville Police Chief Doug Jordan.

Young and another suspect, Nicholas Leon Hill, were identified after an investigation, and warrants were placed for their arrests.

Young was charged with burglary in the first degree, burglary in the second degree and theft by taking for the scrap metal thefts, and he was charged with two counts of criminal damage to property in the second degree and two counts of theft by taking for the Grantville air conditioner thefts.
