Newnan Fire Department personnel and County EMS move the shooting victim through the front yard to a waiting ambulance.

A man suffering from multiple gunshot injuries was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital following a shooting in Newnan on Tuesday.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 p.m. at 21 Lovelace Street, in an area near Boone Drive and West Washington Street. The victim was in the street when three suspects shot at him and hit him more than once, said Newnan Police Chief Douglas “Buster” Meadows. The victim was flown by helicopter ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center and was conscious and talking at the scene, according to public safety radio traffic.

At the recommendation of the police department, both Ruth Hill Elementary School and Newnan High School were placed on a security lockdown from around 1:20 to 1:55 p.m., according to Dean Jackson, public information officer for the Coweta County School System.

Both schools were closest to the incident and put on lockdown as a precaution.

Meadows said he was unsure what exact injuries the victim suffered, but he had not been told the injuries were fatal.

The suspects were described as three black males who fled the scene. The case is being investigated by Sgt. Chad Wood with the Newnan Police Department.
