Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was remembered in Newnan Friday in a memorial program held by Newnan Chapter 483 Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall, at Zion Hill Baptist Church — and the local annual observance continues today with a parade through downtown Newnan.

This weekend marks the 27th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration and parade in Newnan organized by the local OES group.

Due to the morning thunderstorms, the parade will now depart at 2 p.m. instead of the original noon starting time.

Today’s parade departs at 2 p.m. from the area of Armory Road next to Newnan High School. It will move north on LaGrange Street, through West Court Square, and north along Jackson Street (against the usual one-way traffic pattern), turning on Wesley Street and ending at Willie Lynch Park.

Refreshments for participants will be served after the parade.

“The 2014 celebration theme is Illuminating the Star through Rededication, Reclamation and Education for the Growth of the Future,” said Sister Margaret Blandenburg, Chapter 483 Worthy Matron. T-shirts and sweatshirts commemorating the 2014 celebration are available.

Grand marshal for the 2014 parade is Newnan Mayor Pro-Tem Cynthia Jenkins.

Float participants for today’s parade will be entering on Armory Road by 9:30 a.m. for judging. The judging for floats will begin at 10 a.m., Chapter 483 OES representatives said. Coordinators will begin lining up other participants at 11 a.m.
