The longtime Dairy Queen location on Jefferson Street is undergoing an extensive renovation, and the owner hopes to be completed in time for Customer Appreciation Day in mid-January.

Anyone who has headed out of downtown Newnan via Jefferson Street lately might have seen some extensive construction work being done on the Dairy Queen and the vacant Mrs. Winner’s building.

The Dairy Queen is currently undergoing construction for what owner Mohamed Momin calls the “Dairy Queen 2.0 Remodel,” which consists of converting the existing restaurant into a newly themed “DQ Grill and Chill.”

The remodel consists of constructing a parapet, wall-style roof and adding stonework in the form of a chimney on the front of the building. The interior will also be fully redressed with new floor tiles, wall tiles, new countertops and new a self-serve drink station. Both restrooms will also be remade to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act regulations.

“We are also trying to keep our local employees employed,” said Momin. “Starting Jan. 1, we will allow customer cars to park outside and if they wish to order, they can just turn their emergency flashers on. This way it will signal our staff to come out to take their order then deliver it back to their car without the customer even needing to get out.”

Momin stressed that the turning on of the car flashers is very important for the employees to determine whether it’s an actual customer that needs service or is just a parked car.

“We’re also still currently taking our cake orders. They will be made and ready for purchase on the same day while the drive-thru will remain in full operation,” said Momin. “However, the weather will play a big role in regard to our ability to come out to take orders from parked cars since it wouldn’t be safe to do so during inclement weather.”

Momin is hopeful the grand reopening of the longtime Newnan Dairy Queen location will coincide with their annual customer appreciation day, which he traditionally holds on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day — this year on Jan. 20.

Momin also owns the former Mrs. Winner’s building.

“For the Mrs. Winner’s building, we are doing a tenant buildout,” he said.

“This means, for now, we will put up a box-shaped building,” Momin said. “The interior will be totally empty and without any frames or walls, so that whatever tenant decides to lease the building, I would do it at a fixed budget on my end and the rest the tenant would have to cover.”

He explained that the building currently will have no simple exterior finish — that choice will be left to a future tenant. The building will also have a brand new roof, and any future tenant will determine how many air system units will be needed and where duct work, walls and restrooms will need to be placed.

The existing Mrs. Winner’s building is approximately 2,800-3,000 square feet and is currently equipped with a grease trap already in the ground.
