Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, was visiting Georgia this week and paid a visit to Newnan on Wednesday where he held court with a gathering of people at Atlanta Range and Ordinance.

Gun Owners of America is a national membership organization of 300,000 Americans dedicated to promoting their Second Amendment freedom to keep and bear arms.

“I was on Piers Morgan’s show after the Newtown massacre and Piers absolutely melted down,” said Pratt. “As a result, our server crashed three times. Over half a million people saw the show live but if you count our YouTube hits, it’s over a million.”

“I’m known for being anti-gun control but I’ve always said that angry liberals should not have guns. It’s just not a good idea,” laughed Pratt.

Pratt spent time talking to the gun store’s patrons in regards to the ongoing hot topics, including the U.S. House approving a 10-year extension of an existing federal law banning guns that can go undetected by metal detectors and X-ray machines.

The law bans the manufacture, possession and sale of firearms that can't be detected by metal detectors and requires handguns be manufactured in the shape of a gun so they can be screened on X-ray machines.

“A plastic gun can still be seen in a scanner,” he said. “The metal trigger is clearly visible. It’s just as visible as a wooden stock.”

Pratt believes that 2014 will be a crucial election year for gun owners and said he has been working hard to get the word out.

“I’ve always said that our members are the best lobbyists,” said Pratt. “They solidify the fact that we are not a cardboard operation and have helped us to improve what we do.”

Pratt spent the week in Georgia, visiting numerous gun stores and gun ranges to raise awareness for the GOA and gun rights.

Pratt formally endorsed both Bob Barr on his candidacy for the U.S. Congress to represent Georgia’s 11th District along with Congressman Paul Broun of Georgia's 10th congressional district who currently serves as chairman of the Second Amendment Task Force in the House.
