Get into the holiday spirit with 80,000 lights

The Yarbroughs’ light show on Brittain Way in the Timberidge neighborhood is synchronized to music transmitted over low- power FM radio.

With Thanksgiving behind us, it is now officially Christmas time, and that means the Christmas decorations are going up.

Some homeowners go the extra mile when it comes to decorating, and the Yarbroughs on 205 Brittain Way in Timberidge are no exception. This year, like they have been doing since 2006, their front yard is covered in decorations built with 80,000 color-changing lights. On top of this, the lights have been synchronized to music, and the Yarbroughs have set up a low-power fm transmitter so people driving past can listen to the show’s music in their vehicle.

“We have five songs in a sequence that runs about 12 to 13 minutes,” said Loren Yarbrough, who constructs and sets up the light show every year. “It’s just short enough so if people want to watch it all, they can, then they can just move along.”

Yarbrough said he and his wife have been putting up lights at his home since 1996. In 2005, he was inspired by a Miller Lite commercial which featured the “Miller” home with lights synchronized to “Wizards of Winter” by The Trans Siberian Orchestra. That next year he began to create his own synchronized show.

Now, Yarbrough said he has 320 individual channels controlling all the lights from his laptop, and they are synchronized through a program called LightShow Pro. Half of his lights are RGB-LED, he said, and he can program to shine in any color at a cheaper cost that the regular lights you buy in stores.

For decorations, the Yarbroughs have put LED strips on the side of their home, along with lit stars, candy canes, and many different-sized Christmas trees in their yard. Yarbrough said he usually takes off a week or two from work in November to set up the show and make sure everything is working properly.

“We just turned the lights on Sunday,” Yarbrough said last week, “and we had 15 to 20 cars drive by within the first hour.”

The show will be running every night until New Years Day, Yarbrough said. Monday through Friday, the lights will go from around 6 to 9:30 p.m., and on weekends, he will have them on until around 10:30 p.m. There will be a sign in his front yard with the fm frequency so drivers can tune in to the show.

In the past years, the Yarbroughs have collected donations with a dropbox for Coweta Community Food Pantry, but this year, they are switching to BackPack Buddies, an Inter-Faith Food Shuttle charity which provides children from food-insecure homes with weekend meals during the school year. Yarbrough said they would love any non-perishable foods, and he will be posting a list of acceptable donations on his website.

Yarbrough has a website, www.brightonbrittain.com with more details about his show and directions to the Timberidge neighborhood off U.S. Highway 29 North.
