Alcohol changes for special events on Tuesday agenda

by Sarah Fay Campbell

Alcohol licenses will be required for any serving of alcohol at a facility zoned for special events, under a proposal to come before the Coweta County Board of Commissioners Tuesday.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m.

Currently, if alcohol is sold at a special events facility, it must be through a caterer with an alcohol license or at a facility that has an alcohol license. However, the simple serving - not selling - of alcohol does not require a licensed caterer.

A public hearing on the ordinance change will be held during the meeting.

The proposed amendment reads 'alcohol shall be permitted only when provided through a licensed alcohol caterer or where the location qualifies for an alcohol license.'

If the change is approved, a couple having a wedding reception at a special events facility that doesn't have its own alcohol license will be required to hire a caterer with an alcohol license if they want to serve alcohol.

- The first public hearing of the evening will be held on an amendment related to completing projects in subdivisions and maintenance bonds. Currently, a developer must maintain a maintenance bond on previous phases of a subdivision until all phases are complete. The change will remove that requirement, only requiring bonds to last three years after the subdivision is accepted. Another amendment changes the requirement for completing projects from 'substantial completion' of all the structures to completion of 51 percent of structures.

The second hearing to be held is on the creation of a new zoning district, the Residential Retirement Community and Care District.
