Sunday alcohol sales approved in Palmetto

Voters in Palmetto approved expanded alcohol sa les Tuesday.

City Manager Bill Shell said Tuesday that the alcohol sales vote passed 234-161. The issue on the ballot was allowing package sales of alcohol in stores on Sundays.

There were 139 early voters, and 278 Palmetto citizens voted on Election Day on Tuesday. Voting took place at the city hall on Toombs Street.

Five candidates were vying for three seats on the Palmetto City Council on Tuesday. Incumbents Laura Mullis, Lucinda Rockemore and Gregory Rusch were challenged by Michael Arnold and Franklin Smith. Voters picked three candidates - with the seats going to the top three vote-getters.

Winning were Arnold, Mullis and Rockemore. Arnold got 295 votes, and Rockemore got 262. Mullis received 253 votes.

Palmetto voters cast 158 votes for Smith and 106 for Rusch.

Palmetto straddles the Coweta-Fulton county line. Most of the city is in Fulton County.
