Newnan officer guilty of burglary

A former Newnan Police Department officer has admitted guilt to two counts of burglary in the second degree.

Zachery Anderson, 40, was accused of committing two burglaries between September and November of last year, said Coweta County Assistant District Attorney Kaitlin Doyle.

While on his nighttime patrol shift, Anderson broke into the All Stars Academy on Highway 34 East — where his wife worked — and stole tuition money and petty cash from the office, authorities said.

According to Newnan Police Chief Douglas “Buster” Meadows, Anderson was a patrol officer with the department for five years. Anderson was fired from the department in January after his wife filed a protective order against him along with the burglary accusations, Meadows said.

Coweta Superior Court Judge Dennis Blackmon sentenced Anderson to eight years of probation after he pleaded guilty Monday with a blind plea, meaning no plea bargain was reached with prosecutors, Doyle said. In addition, Anderson has been sentenced to undergo psychological evaluation.

As for the indictment of a violation of oath by a public officer, Anderson was found not guilty of this charge on Monday.
