TB confirmed at Smokey Road Middle School

by Celia Shortt

The suspected case of tuberculosis at Smokey Road Middle School was verbally confirmed Friday to District 4 Health Services based in LaGrange.

As a precautionary measure, the student was already being treated for tuberculosis.

'We have done everything in this situation just as we would if we had known it was definitively TB to begin with, as is our protocol,' said District 4 Health Risk Communicator Hayla Folden. 'We will continue to investigate where the student may have come in contact with tuberculosis.'

District 4 Health will also continue to work with the 28 individuals identified as being in contact with the student or riding a school bus with the student and who tested positive for exposure to TB. Their next step is to get a chest X-ray to determine if they have TB.

It is important to note that even with this Smokey Road student testing positive for TB, those 28 people may not have been exposed to TB through this student, said Folden.

'Ten percent of the population has been exposed to TB and may not be aware if they have not been tested,' said Folden. 'For this reason, any time we test a large group, there are positive skin tests results. The number of people we tested in Coweta County was more than 300 with 28 positive, right in the 10 percent range as was expected.'
