Horror Hill not opening for 2013

by Sarah Fay Campbell

For the first time since 1984, there won't be a Horror Hill. But the longtime Halloween tradition for many Cowetans should return next year.

The haunted house had moved to the old Playtex facility on Temple Avenue just west of Newnan, but getting the long-vacant industrial building up to code and transformed into a haunted house on a short schedule turned out to be an impossible task.

'We are sorry to report that we will not be opening for the 2013 season,' a Facebook post for the attraction reads. 'Our building is a very old manufacturing plant that needed to be updated to today's code. In doing that, time has been taken away from our actual haunt construction. It would not be fair to you or us to try and rush to get open and then provide you with an average haunt. Stay with us. We will be back next season in this same location and plan to be one of the best haunted attractions in the country!'

In the meantime, haunt lovers have other options:

• Zombie Village at Powers Pavilion runs tonight, and next Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $15 online and $20 at the gate. Saturday, Nov. 2, is also the 'Wake Up Undead' camp-out event, with an all-night zombie movie marathon. Tickets to the camp-out event must be bought online.

Zombie Village is in its second year and things are going great, said Amy Lane of Powers Pavilion. 'We've had nothing but positive feedback,' she said.

• At Ashley Park, there is a haunted house organized by The Odyssey School and Coweta Special Olympics. The haunted house is open tonight from 5 to 9 p.m., and Monday through Thursday, 5 to 9 p.m.

Admission is $5. 'It went really, really well last weekend,' said Carla White, creator of the haunted house.

• Slightly farther attractions include Camp Blood in Carrollton, The Sleepy Hollow Experience at Serenbe in Chattahoochee Hills, and the House of Horrors at Royal Theater in Hogansville.
