Affordable Care Act enrollment begins Tuesday

by Bradley Hartsell

On Tuesday, enrollment for the Affordable Care Act goes into effect, as part of the comprehensive health reform signed into law by President Obama in 2010.

Beginning on the first of each month, U.S. citizens are encouraged to visit the website, www. healthcare.gov. The site offers an exchange service intended to recommend health coverage that best suited to each individual's need. The exchange service will focus primarily on citizens currently uninsured, offering coverage providers such as BlueCross BlueShield, Humana, Alliance, Kaiser and Peach State.

Once on the site, the viewer will be prompted for specific information, then directed to an application which should be completed and submitted online. A representative for Health & Human Services reports that the time needed to complete the application varies by individual.

The health care coverage plans identified on the exchange will be structured into tiers to aid in identifying the coverage needs of each individual consumer bronze, silver, gold and platinum tiers are offered.

After completing the application and choosing a health care coverage structure best suited, citizens can expect the earliest that coverage will become effective is Jan. 1. The enrollment period continues through March 1, 2014, and will not be reopened until October 1 of 2014.
