The Coweta County Fair runs through Saturday at the Coweta County Fairgrounds on Pine Road.

The 2013 Coweta County Fair continues through Saturday, with lots of rides, food, shows, exhibits and games — all for a good cause.

The fair hours are 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. today, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and noon to midnight on Saturday. The petting zoo closes at 9 p.m., available for visiting until Friday, and the exhibit hall closes at 10 p.m. daily.

The fair is sponsored by the Newnan Kiwanis Club and proceeds are returned to the community.

The Coweta County Fairgrounds is located at 275 Pine Road south of Newnan, just off of U.S. 29 South, near Interstate 85 Exit 41.

Admission is $5; children under 6 enter free with paid adult admission. Unlimited ride armbands are $25. Armbands are not valid on Friday or Saturday nights. Monday is Chick-fil-A night, with $5 off an arm band with coupon; and Saturday, Sept. 28, the last day of the fair, is Military Appreciation Night. All active and retired military personnel are admitted free with military ID.

Today's featured event is Master Gardener "Family Feud" at 5 p.m. in the exhibit hall. The 4-H rabbit showmanship competition will be Monday at 6:30 p.m. and the gingerbread house decorating contest will be at 6:30 in the exhibit hall. Monday is also check-in day for all horticultural exhibits.

Monday is the last day for the BMX Stunt Show and the Puppetone Rockers. The other entertainment runs throughout the fair: Muttville Comix, Eudora Farms with animals from around the world, Torres Family Circus and the High Rollers Historic Bicycles exhibit.

Tuesday's events are the youth Birthday Cake Decorating contest at 7 p.m. in the exhibit hall, the 4-H Poultry Chain Awards at 7 p.m. in the livestock arena, and the 4-H Poultry Showmanship competition at 8 p.m. in the AG building. Wednesday features the 4-H goat show at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday's featured event is the youth "Egg Prep" contest at 6:30 p.m. in the exhibit hall and Saturday includes the dairy heifer show at noon, the Showmanship Sweepstakes at 5:30 p.m. and the Coweta Cattleman's Steak Cookoff at 6 p.m. The Texaco Country Showdown talent show will run from 7 to 11 p.m.

The fair opened Thursday. "We had a great opening night," said Scott Cortner, fair chairman for the Newnan Kiwanis Club. "A great crowd on a cool fall night.”

"There were lots of families with lots of children. I heard lots of squealing and laughter and saw lots of smiles," he said. Eudora Farms and the Puppetone Rockers "were the hits of the evening," he said.

"The facility has never been in better shape and we could not have asked for better weather," reported Cortner.

Fairgoers were offered free admission on opening night with the donation of a canned food item for the Coweta Community Food Pantry.

“Thirty-five boxes of canned goods were collected Thursday,” said Cortner.

The exhibit building is full of handmade quilts, homegrown vegetables, baked goods, photographs, drawings and other homemade or home grown items our talented friends and neighbors entered in the fair,” said Coweta Extension Coordinator Stephanie Butcher.

“Opening night is always an exciting time because it's the first time people see if prizes were won for items entered. There were lots of smiling faces last night.”

Visitors to the exhibit hall were quick to visit the Coweta County Beekeepers Association booth to watch live honey bees busily working.

Speaking of weather, today's forecast is for mostly cloudy skies with a high of 81, a low of 57, and a 20 percent chance of rain. Monday will be partly cloudy with a high of 82, low of 60 and 20 percent chance of rain.

Tuesday's forecast is a 30 percent chance of showers with a high of 77 and low of 61. There's a 30 percent chance of showers Wednesday as well, with a high of 78 and low of 59.

Thursday and Friday will be mostly sunny with a high of 82 and a low of 60, and Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high of 82 and a low of 62.
