Daughter to fill late mother’s position

by Celia Shortt

Theodora Stegall’s work with the Newnan Convention Center Authority is being continued through her daughter Carles Stinson.

Stinson was selected to finish the unexpired term of her late mother, Theodora Stegall, at the Sept. 10 Newnan City Council meeting. Stinson’s mother was a longtime member of the authority and had been an integral part of the recently-completed Newnan Centre meeting facility project on Lower Fayetteville Road. Stegall passed away before it was finished.

“I’m excited because it carries on Theodora’s involvement,” said NCCA Chairman Parks Avery at the authority’s September meeting on Thursday evening.

“The Newnan Centre was like Theodora’s legacy,” said NCCA Secretary Cathy Sandlin. “I’m so excited it’s Carles.”

Stinson will be sworn in at the authority’s regular meeting on Oct. 17.

Chairman Avery also gave a construction update for the Newnan Centre.

“We’re doing pretty well,” he said. “We’re in the punch list phase.”

On the punch list are approximately a dozen items, all of which are already in the process of being finished. People are scheduled to work on them or they are waiting for the necessary materials to arrive.

In other business Thursday:

• The authority approved its budget for the 2014 year. It will be presented to the Newnan City Council at their regular meeting on Monday, Sept 23 at 6:30 p.m.

• The second traffic entrance to the Newnan Centre facility on Lower Fayetteville Road is in process. It was approved by the Coweta County Board of Education at its September meeting. The school system owns and operates the adjacent Centre for Performing and Visual Arts. Avery reported that construction should start on the new traffic entrance sometime after the first of the year.

• Avery also reported that the plans for a hotel near the Newnan Centre are progressing. Earlier this month, the city issued a letter of intent to developer Kim King Associates, LLC, to deliver a 100- to 135-room hotel on the campus of the Newnan Centre. The firm has finished its preliminary appraisal and is going ahead with the full study.

• Newnan Centre Executive Director Carol Moore reported that the catering list for the facility is growing and that necessary operating items need to be purchased.
