Meat & Greet to open on Jefferson St.
by Celia Shortt
The new restaurant at the former site of the Saza Italian restaurant and a portion of the former law offices of Wood, Odom, and Edge on Jefferson Street near Madison was named at Wednesday’s Newnan Downtown Development Authority meeting.
Meat & Greet is planned as a contemporary barbecue restaurant with a casual atmosphere. It should be open by the end of 2013.
At the DDA’s meeting, Newnan Business Development Director Hasco Craver gave another update on the Newnan Hospital Redevelopment Project to create a new University of West Georgia Newnan satellite campus. Craver stated that the abatement and demo are beginning now, but will begin in earnest toward the end of this month and into October. The project is moving forward with the financing from United Bank that was approved at Tuesday’s Newnan City Council meeting. An official groundbreaking was held Monday.
Under the project, the DDA will be used as the group which secures the funds from United Bank. The city will then use the funds for the project. This process will require an intergovernmental agreement with the DDA and the city to be developed. It also requires the assistance of a legal firm for the creation of loan documents and other legal matters in the process.
“The firm we’re using is Alston & Bird,” said Craver. “They will provide legal counsel as needed on the financing of the project.”
Other business included:
• The kiosks which are part of the Gateway Signage Master Plan for the city are moving forward as the plan was approved at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
“They may be in by the end of the calendar year,” said Craver. There will be two downtown in the interior of Court Square.
• Ace Beer Growler will open this fall on West Court Square at the former location of Sugar Magnolia. It will sell craft beer by the growler and specialty grocery items. The beer cannot be consumed on the premises.
