A health care group is interested in moving into the now-vacant former Piedmont Newnan Hospital campus on Hospital Road in Newnan.

Meanwhile, Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Regional is looking at a major expansion over the next two years, and a developer is conducting a feasibility study on building a hotel next to the city’s recently-opened Newnan Centre meeting facility.

All that and more came up during Thursday’s meeting of the Coweta County Development Authority during the report of Newnan Business Development Director Hasco Craver IV.

The health care group has filed a Certificate of Need with the state of Georgia for the abandoned hospital, according to Craver. The group will be meeting with community leaders next week.

The Hospital Road campus, the original location of Coweta General Hospital, was vacated by Piedmont Newnan in the spring of 2012, when the hospital moved to its new facility on Poplar Road.

Also on the health care front, there are potential plans for a 130,000-square-foot expansion to the Cancer Treatment Centers complex off Newnan Crossing Bypass, possibly in the next two years, Craver said.

Plans have already been submitted for a 27,000-square-foot expansion at the Newnan CTCA facility.

In other development news, the city has executed a letter of intent to developer Kim King Associates, LLC to deliver a 100- to 135-room hotel on the campus at the Newnan Centre, located next to the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts on Lower Fayetteville Road.

The developer will have six months to perform feasibility studies and do its due diligence.

The business development director also gave an update on the Newnan Hospital Redevelopment Project, which will transform the old campus of Newnan Hospital on Jackson Street for use as a satellite campus for the University of West Georgia.

UWG currently operates its Newnan Center in space in Shenandoah Industrial Park.

An official ground-breaking ceremony will be held for the project at the Jackson Street site on Monday.

Currently, the abatement due to asbestos and demo work for the college project is already way, Craver said. There are people inside doing demolition work now, and construction will pick up in earnest in October. The construction schedule is October 2013 to October 2014, when the city will be handing the keys over to the university.

Regarding the status of the previously announced new Marriott hotel planned beside the Ashley Park shopping area on Newnan Crossing Bypass, the plans have been submitted and reviewed and the hope is to break ground within the next 60-90 days, Craver said.

There is also word of ground-up construction work in the Summerlin Corner area, near the Kroger and Publix in the area of Lower Fayetteville Road and the bypass, Craver said.

Among other projects, Newnan is moving forward on two new traffic roundabouts: one at Five Points at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, East Newnan Road, Poplar Road and Turkey Creek Road; and the other will be on Lower Fayetteville Road to serve the Newnan Centre. The city is moving through with designs and currently bidding the job out.
