Benjamin Tyler Gray, 28, was arrested at his home in Newnan on Sunday and charged with rape.

A Newnan man was arrested for rape on Sunday.

Early Sunday morning, officers with the Senoia Police Department met with a 27-year-old woman at the Flash Foods convenience store at the intersection of Highway 16 and Highway 85, SPD Lt. Det. Jason Ercole said. The woman told officers she was a victim of rape at a home in Senoia, and she identified her attacker as Benjamin Tyler Gray, 28.

The victim was transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital, and forensic evidence was obtained by medical and law enforcement personnel, Ercole said. Detectives with the SPD located the home in Senoia and met with the homeowners who said they were asleep when the crime occurred. The homeowners gave detectives consent to search the room, and detectives found several items which could be used as evidence and given to agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

After hearing statements from the victim and the homeowners, and with evidence collected at the scene, detectives believed there was probable cause to arrest Gray, Ercole said. Later that day, detectives obtained a warrant charging Gray with rape, and he was arrested at his home in Newnan. A second search warrant was obtained to collect a sample of his DNA. After the sample was taken, Gray was transported to the Coweta County Jail.

Gray’s DNA will be sent to the GBI Crime Lab to be tested and compared to evidence collected by authorities.
